Health scare forces US boxer out

USA boxer Gary Russell Jr has been forced to withdraw from the Beijing Olympics after collapsing while struggling to make his weight.

After a workout in a final attempt to make the 54kg limit, the 20-year-old was found unconscious in his room.

Russell won a world bronze in 2005 and was an Olympic medal prospect

Russell's withdrawal comes 24 hours after British medal hope Frankie Gavin was also pulled out for health reasons.

Team USA coach Dan Campbell believes Russell did not follow instructions to increase his fluid intake.

The highly rated bantamweight is said to be feeling "depressed" after being removed from the American team ahead of the tournament, which starts on Saturday.

Russell was rehydrated by medical staff at the athletes' village and although checks showed his condition was not serious, he was ruled unfit to take part in Friday's mandatory weigh-in.

"It's been extremely hot and that probably played a part. When trying to make weight, these kids sometimes cut corners," said Campbell.

See this weight-making bull****? It's the bane of the game, worse than the governing bodies or the money men or any of that.

Shame to see it ****ing up the amatuers, too, and at their biggest shin dig.

Bigger fighter thinking of having a better medal chance at a lower weight. Man this is sad.

Fully agreed. I absolutely hate weight draining and wish people would just fight at their natural weights.

Marnoff - there is a thin line between losing some water weight for a weighin in a reasonable time, reasonable amount of weight, and not being able to cut that much successfully because of a big tournament, pressure, "easier" to fight at a lower weight. People lie, also.
Maybe he was kidding them he could make the weight.

A lot of the problems is that the modern ams from countries where there's a lot of money in going pro are 18-23 and so when they have to fight in comps to qualify nearly a year before the games there are going to be some who grow naturally and struggle to make weight on the same division that they qualified in nearly a year earlier.

It's exactly the same as the professionals in that the kids want to fight in the lower weight class so as to increase their chances of winning.

I like it how the American's are blaming the boxers though for not taking in enough liquids. In the UK were are blaming the experts who give advice and monitor the boxers - obviously Gavin has to take some blame as well.
