ok......? As a fan of boxing I could really give a **** less either way what country the fighters are coming from
nah i think that Uk as you say isnt going to be the dominate nation....but is the states going to be as dominant? when a team that wasnt thought to win beats them 9-2 then you know somthings different
Look at the size of America, and look at the size of the UK I'd say we are holding up pretty well, dominating 3 divisions with a number of other contenders We are set to dominate, just face it
Err not really, lennox lewis is a top ten all time heavyweight. Also one of the guys from america was hte golden gloves national champ, you don't notice that most of the uk guys where the 2nd guys in that weight as the other are already going to the olympics.
I saw it,and personaly think most of the american lads would be far better suited to the pro game anyway, the scoring system in the amatuers is ****ing crap, loads of shots seemed to not score, weird ****,and im a british guy to,i just think the guys need to go pro, some of the yanks looked very strong with good power, just not maybe suited to the way you need to fight in the amatuer game
Dominate? I don't know about that -- Eastern Europe, Mexico and South America are still producing great fighters. I can damn well be sure, however, that the sun is setting on American boxing. Teddy Atlas was right that America's best athletes are being sucked away by other professional sports enterprises. I'll say one more thing, American fans could learn a thing or two about supporting boxing in general and fighters from the Brits, Welsh, etc. Like JC or not, he is loved all over Wales and would still be loved if he had lost to Kessler. The same goes for Hatton. It's also nice to see sportsmen in Europe who reserve their fights for inside the ring as opposed to American fighters who as of late increasingly act like undignified clowns at pressers to sell fans raised on a lowbrow mentality common to professional wrestling and mma. Hell, if one of our fighters in the States either (a.) loses a fight and blemishes a perfect record; or (b.) squeaks by a narrow decision against anyone, he is labelled a fraud unworthy to challenge anyone for anything. Look at the boards here. About 90% of the posts are directed about how fighter "x" is a fake based on some perceived weakness or as a result of not having faced person "y." God forbid if an American fighter is knocked out. It's the kiss of death for American fans who then label said fighter "china chinned" forever no matter how many successful matches he has afterwards.
It also amazes me that its usually Island countries like Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominiqua, Jamaica, England that represent these small dominants. Panama which is kind of Penninsular has had more than its fare share of champions as well.
great post and not bad from blind lemon:hey i really do hate the way promoters promote there fighters as destroyers, tysonesque bruisers with a ton of power and koes and HAS to be unbeaten the idea of invincability is a huge thing to markatability. a decent example would be valuev, he was thought of as unbeatable becuase of his size and presence. but when ruiz fought him to a close fight...almost robbery people in the know knew he wasnt gonna be elite. but yet becuase he was unbeaten he has that aura about him and we saw a ton of threads saying valuev would of beaten marciano not long after ect. sadly the only fighters people care about is prospects...prospects, prospects, prospects just looking for a guy with a 15 fight plus record unbeaten with a bit of power and skills an is seen as the next champ. and so they get put into the system of fighting bums, and simple journeyman and ex-champs (who were prolly not very good in there prime) then if they get upset and lose...boom they become part of the conveyor belt. if your a balls out brawler or an exciting fighter then you may come away with the peoples champion thing like micky ward. the best way to become a great fighter now adays is to lose your first fight by robbery and thus it doesnt matter if you lose and you are now more of a target becuase you have a loss on your record. happend with de la and pernell.
And the guys in this dual were all second, AT BEST. Siju Shabazz won Golden Gloves. And? He's not on the Olympic Team, he's not the Olympic alternate, Yathomas Riley is. I know that English fans are excited that they have a good squad this year, but calm down, they beat the USA in one dual where the best member of the team isn't the main Olympic alternate (Rico Ramos, who is sparring at the OTC with Raynell Williams; but Hylon Williams is the main alternate I believe). And, as an addendum-Shawn Porter is a very, very good boxer. And there's no way at all he only scored 4 points unless the judges weren't counting a lot of his shots, for whatever reason. He scores that many points in a round almost as a bare minimum, with the way he fights.
We don't even box in America anymore. We have drum circles, smoke herb and play hackey sack. The Jocks? Look at the NFL. That would have been our stable for potential pro boxers. Boxing isn't promoted to youth here like it once was. If you really want to be a good boxer, you need to start at a young age. The younger the better. Most parents these days would rather let their kids play football, baseball, anything other than boxing because of its crooked reputation, guys like Don King, seeing legends like Ali AFU'd. Nobody wants their kids to get paid to have their brains rattled around.. Hell, my kids will be allowed to watch boxing. I will take them to the Gym. But, as soon as they show they are going nowhere, I'm pulling them. Too many fighters are ****ed in the head.
:good completely sums it up. American youth athletes have a choice: they can get paid millions to play other sports and save the brain damage, or go for boxing where odds are 99% against them that they will make less money and get more f'ed up. Its a no-brainer (no pun intended)
