I would imagine most good fighters would rather just train and go professional than waste their time with the Olympics. Let's see: Go pro, begin to make some money while also building up your record/resume to position yourself for a shot at a professional world title. or Go fight amateur where they don't count body shots. Scoring is setup in a way where a fighter can just stand with his gloves up and not give up any points. Fighters wear headgear, protecting guys who would normally get KO'd. Fights are only 4 rounds. Rounds are only 2 minutes. Not to mention you can get robbed by judges who are bias to particular countries. Also open scoring, which promotes fighters getting a lead and running for the rest of a fight. Olympic boxing is a serious joke, the scoring system is broken, and it has a history of terrible decisions by bias judges. (Holyfield, Jones, etc.) I wouldn't waste my time either.
Asswipe, both SRL and Whitaker have somthing the BONEHEAD who is running the program now DOESNT POSSESS and neither does your pathetic ass, and that is an Olympic Gold Medal. Who better, than these two masters could study the current system, and this year's Gold Winners, and formulate a program that would guarantee that America isnt embarrassed in London in '12?
If you weren't an idiot or a troll, I'd actually respond seriously. Suffice to say SRL is from the same county in Maryland that I am and everyone loves him. He's a great guy and was a great fighter. Guess what? That doesn't mean he'd be a great coach, you ****ing ******. Pernell Whitaker as well is known to be one of the most abrasive personalities in the sport and you think he should coach an Olympic team of what basically consists of 11 late teen's/early twenties guys? Get real. Not only that but none of those guys would want to do it anyway; not enough money. It reeks of a ****ing publicity stunt and I guarantee it would go even worse than this year did because pros have a nasty tendency to try to train guys to fight like them; which won't work with the current system.
The headgear protects against cuts, cauliflower ears, and rabbit punches; not KO's, smart one. And they're going back to 3x3 in January of '09. And the scoring system is changing too. And just so you know, for some people; a lot of people in a lot of countries actually; an Olympic berth or Gold Medal isn't a waste of time, it's the pinnacle of their sporting careers.
Kolya is making solid points about SRL and coaching in general. Jack Prescott sounds like an old man who has no clue. That is all.
In fact Britain has one boxer guaranteed at least a bronze, and with a good chance of better, and two boxers still in the quarter finals. That's precisely the same showing as Ireland at the moment, and is better than the USA.
Make that at least two bronzes for Britain and Ireland and both countries still have a fighter in the quarter-finals. Seeing as Tony Jeffries fights Kenny Egan in the Light-Heavyweight semi-final that will turn to Silver for at least one of the countries.
If the USA was as good as Cuba you guys wouldn't be complaning, the only reason you guys are crying is because all of your fighters lost.
I take it you never caught the Brit DeGale thumping your american boy Estrada the other day then, and a further two brits in the semi's? Fud. atsch
Kolya, you seem to be pretty up to date on USA Boxing. I seem to remember there being some kind of announcement that Manny Steward and others were going to become involved in an effort to improve things. Did anything ever come from that?
