absolutely. Hey JG, I was wondering since you got to train alongside Willie, although you said he didn't do much training, what would he do boxing wise in the gym that might be different as far as other boxers and their training routines? A lot of mirrors, a lot of sparring, excessive double end bag?

He went through the motions with floor exercises, N. But, like the born ham he was, he loved being center-stage sparring, makin' monkies of the toughest guys in the gym, dazzling fighters 'n delighting gym rats.

I've always wondered what Luis Rodriguez and the other Cubans thought about Pep and Pastrano...Any comments one way or the other?

They marveled at him, d, even when Pep was long-past his prime. Wasn't a boxing great at the 5th St.Gym that didn't treat 'im like a deity

Pep who I saw in 1943 making a ****** out of a top lightweight Allie Stolz, was like a shadow on the wall, you could see it but couldn't hit it..
Pep before his near fatal accident was so good then, in 1944 he licked a great boxer Willie Joyce, who decisioned Ike Williams twice, and a few weeks later toyed with a
young greatfeatherweight from NY Lulu Constantino, who once had a streak of 56
wins in a row...Pep at that time had to been seen to be believed...The Will Of The Wisp.

I believe that Ali's estimation of Pastrano must have been high...he did influence Ali.

Burt, since you (and JG) got to see Pep before and after the accident, how would you say it changed him. was he not able to move as well as before the plane crash?

Willie Pep after his near fatal plane crash was laid up for six months..He was in traction in the hospital and told that he was lucky if he would be able to walk again, but certainly Willie would never fight again..
Pep fooled them all,by returning to the ring oin June,1947.
By all accounts he lost some of his uncanny quickness.I recall some boxing writers would mention this in the papers, after one of his bouts...Of course by the time of his last bout before the accident
[ kod Chalkey Wright ],Pep had about 111 bouts, and that also becomes a factor...But Pep did lose someting, when he returned to the ring, but still
was far better than anyone excluding, spidery Sandy Saddler, who's rough
style in close would always give pep problems...
Boxing is all styles, as I believe how great Saddler was ,I believe a sharp
hitter and rangy Alexis Arguello, would give the easy to hit Sandy Saddler
    fits, and possibly stop Saddler...STYLES...b.b.

that's a good point also, that his previous 111 bouts could have played a role in him somewhat fading physically.

Do you think any of the modern day featherweights would give Saddler problems? Junior Jones, Barrera, Morales, MArquez, or Manny?

I certainly think that a Barrera, Marquez, and especially Manny would possibly beat Saddler...Sandy Saddler COULD be hit alright...And these boys could hit...
But I think that Arguello because of his ranginess and tremendous punching power, would
be a great threat to Saddler...Sandy was as strong as a lightweight, was a cruel ,cutting
puncher, but was not hard to find, and Alexis would find him, IMO...b.b.

Arguello might have had better timeing than Saddler as well. Do you agree?
