I thought some of you would be interested in this. You can read and/or listen to what Steve had to say clicking the link below: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/2012/...-yet-so-im-willing-and-prepared-to-show-them/ (Apologies in advance for the subpar audio quality - we had a real shaky connection with a lot of distortion - but you can make most of it without many issues, barring a couple of short stretches early)
I doubt that USS can achieve much at HW, his age is against him, he will he slowing down more and more with each fight, plus, he's proven in the past that he doesn't have too good a chin, he wasn't a murderous puncher at CW and I doubt he suddenly developed iron fists, he'll probably beat Gavern by UD, I hope I'm wrong, because he seems a likeable guy, but it doesn't look like he'll achieve too much at HW
He may be able to make himself some nice paydays in the twilight of his career, though. And I certainly think there are guys he can potentially beat.
Maybe he thinks; "If Mormeck can make it to a titleshot, so can I!" ...But I doubt he can make much waves (pun intended).
Even though he did not say this in the interview, I kind of get the impression that may be what he's gunning for. He could possibly beat Adamek, too, and if he did, he can either get a rubber match or possibly another decent payday. I doubt he made a whole lot as a cruiserweight, and he spent a good portion of his career fighting in Europe. He's 36 now. I always admired the heart Steve displayed whenever the going got tough. NOBODY can question that about him. If he can close out the last few years of his career by solidifying some good paydays, I wish him the very best!
I love the guy but I worry he's an accident waiting to happen at this weight. He should have hung at Cruiser and tried to rematch Huck.
I know there are two sides to every story, but Steve said Huck would not rematch him. Let me ask you this: How much of a chance would you give Steve against Tomasz at heavy? Assume both of them look decent enough and win on Saturday for argument's sake.
I have a feeling that he is on the slide - but that's yet to be seen. If it's not the case, he could certainly win. But this weight division could mean the end for him. Consecutive losses you can survive, consecutive KO's and suddenly you're a journeyman. I still ranked Cunnigham top five at CW. Is he top thirty-five at heavy?
I always liked Cunningham, he's always been willing to fight the best. I don't think he'll have much impact at heavyweight but if he plays it right he could probably make a nice payday or two before retiring. Cunningham probably made his move to heavy a few years too late and is probably on the downside now. With him being on the slide and his less than stellar chin I think he's also an upset waiting to happen. He might get an Adamek fight or possibly someone like Tarver. I think he ends up being a nice test for some prospects. I could see a Cunningham-Jennings fight sometime next year since they are both with Main Events.
i was wondering when he would eventually do this i mean he has been a career cruiser, went to the others guys backyards to fight. he actually has more fans over seas than he does here i think cunningham could make a decent run at the weight if he follows the formula of adamek and mormeck run up 5 or 6 wins a the weight while undefeated against familiar but not necessarily top guys and earn a shot
Cunningham vs Adamek II has to happen. The first one was a great bout and both guys are at a stage of their careers where there aren't many other meaningful fights for them that are winnable.
