This content is protected I would’ve thought Vitali! As tough and badass as he is… I would think it would be him due to being less powerful and slower than Wladimir. But… he definitely is more awkward! And sturdier. I would still be 50/50 for a Peak Wlad vs Usyk. Vitali… 60/40 in favor of Usyk by decision.
I suppose there is an element of first hand experience here; Usyk sparred Wlad and apparently gave a great account of himself. Still, prime for prime, Wlad would be a much tougher proposition for Usyk in an actual fight IMO.
I think with Wlad it would be a more genuine boxing match both guys highly skilled jockeying for position trying to figure each other out early then trying to force a mistake. With an awkward guy like Vitali sure Usyk can beat him but he is more unpredictable where the punches can come from anywhere plus the guy is made of steel which allows him to apply constant pressure. I am not saying Vitali is better than Wlad but I think he is more stressful to fight him so I understand Usyk's decision. Also I think Usyk would like to test his skillset against a fellow Olympic gold medalist.
The theory of Vitali being the more formidable brother has some evidence backing it and this is just another feather in his cap. Interesting that Usyk sees Vitali has the harder fight when Wlad had an easier time with mobile HWs. He sparred both so I'll take his word for it
Vitali had an Iron Chin awkward lean back style and a very mean disposition. I’d rather fight Wlad also.
I'd rather fight Wlad, but mostly because I know I would be KO'd quickly and I wouldn't have to let my balls get in the way of my long-term health. Hey, didn't Usyk also imply once that he was better than both K brothers but NOT Joshua? Also, didn't Johnny Nelson claim that Usyk absolutely owned Wlad in sparring, so badly that Wlad told him to leave and never go in like that in front of the camera when the workout is public? Something like that?
To be fair, sometimes boxing fans predict fight outcomes perfectly, down to what round the fight ends and what punch from whom ends it.
True enough, but it's also true that fighters and their teams know what styles they like and don't like.
True. As a bit of a side note, often when I see a similar quote I remember the time when Cotto fought Trout - clearly a cherrypick gone wrong, they thought they had an easy title win on their hands. Anyways, Pedro Diaz after one of the early rounds said something like: "We got it wrong". I think he meant that they severely underestimated Trout and had a bad gameplan. Of course plenty of hardcore fans were saying before the fight that Trout was all wrong for Cotto. Cotto and his team were on a high off of that little win streak and the excellent performance against Mayweather, and it bit them in the ass big time.
Yeah, boxers have been known to have a cherry pick go wrong. I don't know if something is wrong with me, but I love when a cherry pick goes wrong. I think it's funnier than hell.
I believe this is only true in certain matchups to be honest. I think Wlad would fair better against guys that get overly confident and are foolish enough to dismiss his power and hand speed. Like I still to this day feel had Chisora fought Wlad the same way he did Vitali… he’d have been out of there by round 4 or 5. Same with Lewis. All it takes from Wlad is the right lead hook or 1-2 and lights out. Unless they are iron chinned. Vitali was more of an accumulation KO guy.
