You just told me two different things. Strength for a particular thing or for general strength? Or do you mean both? Bench press is strength for a particular thing, it is functional strength for pushing from your chest. It is helpful for punching as well. It is helpful for pushing someone away from you. So is bench press functional strength then? My mate was a gymnast, and absolutely he did bench press in his training. Saying that something is functional or not makes zero sense.
Is this serious? You hadn’t boxed before and you’re wondering why someone who boxes boxed your head in? What on earth does that have to do with lifting weights or so called functional strength lolol You’re seriously asking why lifting weights didn’t make you a good boxer? If you take that boxer who destroyed you and give them your weightlifting strength then they would destroy the non-weightlifting version of themselves that kicked your ass. Do you think Beterbiev and Canelo lifting weights makes no difference? Boxers lift weights and do explosive exercises. Lifting heavy things helps you to be more explosive. What part of it isn’t ‘functional’?
Why didn’t my bodybuilding exercises make me a good boxer on the first day I stepped in a boxing gym? I’m not sure if he’s serious either lol I ate a salad and I didn’t beat a tennis player the first time I played tennis, in conclusion eating salad is no good if you’re a tennis player lol
This is just silly. If you’re stronger you can do more reps of less weight. Someone running around and playing tennis has almost nothing to do with leg strength of any sort, you’re bouncing and your heart/lungs are doing the recovery. Aerobic endurance is not strength ffs
Who said anything about destroyed me, dumbass? I said I couldn't touch them because they moved all the time and blocked, I couldn't transfer my strength that I got primarily from weight training until I changed my training to use less weights or be strategic with it. I never said that weights should never be used. Canelo and AJ are not exactly the poster children for endurance or movement. They both could barely touch their opponent recently, who wasn't as strong on paper but they couldn't bully them. To be clear, I know most fighters use weights but some of that doesn't necessarily transfer. Who gives a **** how heavy AJ can lift when he couldn't land any of his power but got rocked by the smaller Usyk instead. All I'm saying is that maybe he should change the training. Oh and 70's fighters fought 15 rounds and they didn't use much weights.
No, bench press is limited to a single plane of movement and is only good for strengthening your ability to draw your elbow towards your centre line. This has very little athletic use. Funny you say it's good for pushing someone away. That's an inefficient and poor way to do so - the better way is to drive from the legs, hinge at the hips, and lock your lats in place. You can improve these things with deadlifts, squats, snatch, clean n jerk, and pull ups. All of which are exercises known for improving functional strength. Even golfers do Olympic lifting these days. Sorry, I don't believe any "I have a mate who" stories online. Funny how you have a perfect anecdote to back up your point lol.
A 6`3 fighter doesn`t need to juice to get up to 220-225lbs, that really isn`t that big, ask a pro body builder.
What do you mean? That’s a literal fact. That’s why you have percentages of max rep in gym programs. Say you can lift this 150kg for one, then you should be able to do 5x120kg. You then increase your 150 to 180, then you can do more than 5 reps of 120kg. This is an abc/101 fact of training.
No, you started to learn boxing. Again that has absolutely nothing to do with the weights you joker lol It makes literally zero sense. And btw, Usyk lifts weights hahahaha
You don’t always push someone off with your legs, in any sport you’re often in a less than optimal position. Even if you have beastly strong legs for pushing, a bench press adds to that pushing strength, say if you’re a rugby player or a basketball player. You know all those Russian and Chinese weightlifters do bench press as well in certain parts of their training? You sound mad at the bench press for some reason, did someone with a good bench snag your girl? There’s basically no athlete that doesn’t use the bench press so I don’t know why you’re saying it has no athletic use. Even golfers use bench press these days. Strength in any plane is useful for injury prevention if nothing else, could anything be more ‘functional’ than that (keeping healthy)? You sound like someone who just learned that Olympic lifts exist, stop using buzzwords that don’t mean anything.
