Achievements in two divisions? Usyk was undisputed at Cruiser which was never achieved by Ward at any weight. Usyk holds 3 belts at heavyweight, same 3 Ward held except there was no controversy involved in his win whereas most will agree Ward clearly lost to Kovalev the first time, and the stoppage in the second was questionable. Also Usyk has won every belt in his opponents home country, Ward never fought outside the USA even in the super six tournament. Both won Olympic Gold, Usyk probably won a few more things overall as an amateur though. Usyk has done more quite clearly for me.
Only way Usyk can trump Ward for me now is if he gets dropped by Darnell Boone & wins a gift over an alcoholic whilst exchanging foreheads with Sakio Bika in front of 10s of his home town fans
Usyk is a far greater fighter. Usyk won all his big fights in foreign countries. He was never afraid to travel, and didn't need to use ilegal tactics such as head butts. The privileged Andre Ward was afraid to leave the USA, perhaps because honest referees wouldn't permit him to use his dirty tactics. And at home, he could always count on his dodgy home judges, like in Ward-Kovalev I.
Usyk and it’s not even close. In many ways these guys are complete opposites. Usyk is a clean technical boxer, Ward was a cheating head butting guy who seemed like he wanted to wrestle more than box. Usyk has fought most opponents in their own back yard, Ward rarely ventured outside of Oakland when he could get away with it against any other SMWs. Ward came back to boxing and cherry picked Kov, a faded alcoholic shell for his former self, Usyk just fights the best guys at his weight and will fight anyone. After taking the belt, Ward scurried into retirement without defending it. Usyk was a true champion who unified Cruiser, moved up and beat the top HW in his home stadium. He’s a very humble classy guy. Ward is his own biggest fan, an arrogant punk who acts like he invented boxing. He’s known as a smart fighter but Usyk’s ring IQ is levels above Ward. No comparison, Usyk better in every category by a country mile, even if he quit today and never fought another fight.
Kovalev beat Ward and took the shine off him. If Ward had dominated Kovalev you may have a case, though I'd still say Usyk. The fact that Kovalev dropped and outboxed Ward is pretty damning to the rest of his career when talking ATG's. Ward was UNWILLING to chase greatness to the degree someone like Usyk is. Wouldn't leave Oakland.
Usyk & its insulting to try & compare Ward to him! Usyk is totally fearless & relishes going to fight in other people's backyards, something which Ward was terrified of plus Usyk doesn't resort to elbowing, headbutting & receiving gift decisions to win his fights!
As someone who had Ward beating Kovalev in their first fight, giving the edge to Usyk here, mainly because of the undisputed crown and the fact that Usyk fought any where under any circumstances while Ward always wanted to have his way and be in full control. I expect the gap will keep getting wider with what Usyk and his wins(mainly Joshua, Gassiev and Hunter) will go on to accomplish.
Both Olympic gold medalists. Both won tournaments to be recognized the best in their division to unify but Usyk became undisputed but Ward never fought Bute, went on a 9 month holiday and told Bute to fight Froch and so never became undisputed. Both moved up in weight beat a highly regarded title holder but Ward did win all the belts, Usyk has yet to win the WBC belt. But it's also one thing to jump up 7lbs to a division you fought at as an amateur and another to jump to a division with no weight limit and become a champion at a weight you've never fought at. Right now I'd say it's close between them in terms of who's greater. In terms of who's career path I prefer, I'd say Usyk, he's gone for the big fights from the start and won titles away from home, Ward all too often tried to get an angle for an advantage and all too often turned fans against him with his behaviour which seemed so indifferent while Usyk seems to want to please the fans. If Usyk beats Fury then it's no contest but right now I only give Usyk a slight edge.
Uysk Trumped Ward. When Ward resorted to dirty taxtics to beat Kovalev, Kovalev beat him in the 1st fight. A cruiserweight going up to beat huge men eclipses what Ward did imo.
Alot of Americans don't see the importance of An over sea belt taker, globetrotter. Which ward couldn't do as he lost his passport.
Deluded how? Ward cleared out the SMW division beating arguably better opposition than Usyk did when he cleared out the CW division. Both moved up a division and beat a top guy. In Wards case, the top guy. To say someone picking Ward is delusional is a stretch. That being said, I like both guys. But, I give a slight edge to Usyk because he manner in which he won. On the road and rarely in any kind of trouble. If he continues like he is he should separate himself from Ward considerably.
