We aren't going to agree on this. I guess it comes down to how I see things, myself. Having fought in a range of codes from point competition to full contact martial arts, I'm strongly of the opinion that whilst Usyk is very much entitled to his opinion (as you say), he is categorically wrong if he voiced it in this context. You cannot legitimately claim victory over someone in a different code to the one you beat them under. Taking this situation to the extreme, it is not completely dissimilar to Fury claiming victory over Ngannou in another fighting style. Though, on introspection I really shouldn't be this bothered by all this. I guess while I take such comments from Fury as a joke, I have far more respect for Usyk, so I find this inclusion of Joyce among the guys he defeated in the pros as disappointing. It is what it is, I guess.
They shared a ring and were both fighting the other with no head guards in a boxing match, that should be enough to rank someone against other fighters you also shared a ring with does it really matter if it was pro or amateur or something in between
Physically sure, he was probably past prime in that sense. But yeah I could agree that his peak performance may well have been in 2020 rather than 2022.
You cite previous experience as a credential for yourself, yet discredit Usyks experience who actually fought them. WSB wasn't a novice or amateur fight, the only difference was number of rounds fought, and if I'm not mistaken there were titles on the line during the WSB.
Oleksandr Usyk saved Tyson Fury's life. Both will cement each others legacies & both will retire 1-1 in each others arms as the greatest HW fighters of the last 20 years standing next to Lennox.
I'm citing experience for what is generally understood about fighting. As others pointing out it was an olympic champion fighting essentially a guy who very much still an amateur in a semi pro team event many see as a bridge to pro boxing. If you lot disagree then that is fine. I've expressed my position on it, and explained why
This was when AJ was doing his best impression of a slick boxer as opposed to the boxer-puncher he was pre-Ruiz.
Big Joe Joyce was coming off one of his best wins in the amateurs when he fought Usyk. He beat Hrgovic in the WSB the previous month. Hrgovic was the #1 ranked SHW in the WSB IIRC. And Big Joe had also beaten Frazer Clarke x 3 prior to facing Hrgovic too
True but later that year Joyce got stopped by Kuzmin and Beguerni. Definitely wasn't anywhere near a peak Joyce, which is understandable considering how little experience he had at that point.
I actually saw that fight live (Beguerni). Not many on here have. Big Joe was still a good fighter and a handful back then though. I actually prefer the lighter Big Joe we saw in the amateurs to the much heavier version of today whose slow-fast speed equilibrium is all off
