Fighting with bigger gloves most definitely effects hand speed and punch effect. Usyk has a much harder fight in 12 rounds with small gloves than he does 5 rounds with big gloves. FFS that is obvious Joyce probably lost 5-0 to Dubois if we go on 5 rounders lol Joyces style is suited for the longer rounds against smaller guys. Joyce kryptonite isn't a slickster, its a big puncher with a good chin
Someone get this karate dork out of here. "Having fought in a range of codes" what the hell are you talking about. You seem like a clown who has never been in a fight. Every thread has you rushing to the defense of some top 5 heavyweight who will never know you exist. It's genuinely surprising you're into boxing.
"Every thread has you rushing to the defence of some top 5 heavyweight" Sounds like I'm defending many fighters. I'm also critical of many fighters. In this very thread in fact. Joyce isn't top 5 either, btw. "Who will never know you exist" We are on an anonymous boxing forum, it's sadly to be expected "Someone get this karate dork out of here." Actually I've never really trained in karate. Have fought overseas in a full-contact tournament against kyokushin fighters, though. They are teak tough. Took a bit of a pasting in that one if I'm honest. It happens. "It's genuinely surprising you're into boxing." Well, boxing is a far better spectator sport than MMA, and I appreciate the style of fighting/training. Why are you into boxing?
As much as I like Usyk, he seems very matey with Chisora and Bellew, probably gained respect for each other post fights and the two of them especially Bellew has been a vocal praiser of Usyk for years now. Deep down Joshua probably pissed him off greatly with his post fight antics as did Warren/Dubois.
So you went to Japan and got beat up in karate once? Did you learn about boxing through anime and then make a forum account? You seem like some weirdo LARP guy saying "I have fought in a range of codes". Time to take a break from the internet champ.
Amusing, but you are a bit scattershot with the insults. I live in Japan. I came third in that tournament, which ain't bad. You were close with the "champ" dig, but it was national level. Truth is, I trained and fought since childhood and a large part of my adult life (even lucky enough to receive funding along the way) Actually, I suspect (kind of know) there are many posters with similar experience, and some with even more, and likely many without any. I don't think it matters on a boxing fan forum Having said that, experience can ground comments. But, hey I often say things that are spectaculary wong or disagreeable! I'm just not wrong on this one "Time to take a break from the internet, champ" We should probably both take a break from whatever this is (isn't it Friday night where you are?) Saying that, a post in the lounge about LARPing sounds interesting. Tell us more!
Yeah, probably right there. Especially that last bit. Usyk did everything right during that post fight (his team even acted sympathic towards Joshua). But yeah that post fight meltdown and throwing the belts out... it was a moment for the Ukraine. And the Warren/Dubois media campaign would likely **** anyone off
I was thinking the same thing. Usyk took it well and tried to give some advice...but he made him give that flag back, didn't he? It was kind of like drawing a red line, and maybe hoping Big Josh would cross.
Usyk sure is a different breed. In his last interview he even appears to slag off his supporters that claim the ref saved Fury. Of course the ref did save Fury but Usyk always takes the high ground. He really does show a lot of restraint in the face of the stupidity of the professional boxing community.
Big Joe was lighter, faster and more mobile back then and, as said, still a real handful. Not to mention that Usyk was obviously not a SHW and he was fighting giants in the WSB and without headguards for the first time IIRC and it's not like he fought timidly against them and tried to just nick a points decision whilst talking minimal risks. Usyk is a nightmare stylistic match up for the bigger, slower more ponderous pro Big Joe, especially the more mobile Usyk of a few years ago.
I think, actually, they were fighting with 10oz gloves. Just they were velcro rather than tie up. Still, I agree with much of what you wrote. It was a great performance (+91 kgs) as @Serge said. But it was a 5-round team-tournament format, and Usyk was Olympic champion (turning pro that same year) and Joyce was English ABA National champion (who had most of his amateur career success in the following 4). Maybe he included Joyce's name with a wink because it doesn't belong with his other pro wins.
