I'd prefer him to retire. He has nothing to prove anymore. Nothing at all. However, if he wants to continue fighting I think he should exclude thinking about trimming down to cruiserweight. For 2 reasons: 1) slimming down to the lower weight always went bad historically, especially for 35+ y.o. fighters. RJJ, Byrd, Toney, Tarver (Hopkins fight) etc. The are very, very few examples of successful trimming down to smaller weight, and all they came from much younger fighters, who either started their career at the higher weight (Bob Foster), or climbed in weight just for one fight (Marco Huck). But Usyk is 38, he is competing at HW for the last 5+ years, and he is solid 225 lbs muscular frame. It's not like he is 210 lbs with Tony Bellews body. 2) IF Usyk wants to continue, he STILL has some interesting challenges at HW. Winner of Dubois vs Parker is one of them. Winner of Zhang vs Kabayel is another one. Because either of them would present Usyk a new challenge. He faced almost all the sizes and styles - giants, murderous punchers, excellent boxers, but he never fought giant murderous punching southpaw with very solid skills (Zhang) or guy like Kabayel who specifies on body punching and is the best body puncher at HW for decades. As for Opetaia, I'd much rather watch that fight at HW as well after Jai unifies cruiserweight division. Usyk definitely should stay at HW until the end of his career
outstanding post. No reason for him to go down. Its a recipe for disaster. Usyk has beaten a very good southpaw in Glowaki before but not one who has the monstorous power of a Zhang. So a win over Zhang will be good. A win over a well rounded heavyweight like Kabayel or Parker will be good too. Stay at heavy. If he wants Opetaia, make Jai move up and not the other way around.
I completely agree. There's always another challenge but eventually one challenge will become a challenge too far.
Keep in mind that Usyk has stated a few times it's a struggle to maintain his HW size so in his case it might be better to go back. There was the case of the mma fighter St Pierre who bulked up to fight Bisping at the higher weight class then claimed he damaged his digestive system having to eat so much to get the size.
Usyk said to Amir Khan yesterday that he has gained a lot of weight since Fury rematch and currently weighs in at 110 kilos which is 242 lbs. He is full fledged HW now
Tbh I'm getting sick of all these "Usyk should retire" threads. If he wants to step back down to cruiser to wipe out the division then let him. Personally I'd rather see him flesh out his HW resume, but I'm happy with whatever he decides.
If he decides to go back to cruiser it would be the most stupid decision in his whole career. As the OP has already said, it never ends well.
This content is protected Yeah he looks massive right now, I've never seen his face look this fat lol. He's been enjoying himself.
Usyk should retire. This is an objective fact. and he would be one of very few people in boxing who would retire undefeated without a real asterick on his resume. He is 38 years old next week. It is a NO BRAINER. His chances of losing to someone even a fighter people would deem inferior to Fury go up exponentially as each month passes. Father time will beat the hell out of you overnight and steal your lunch money. He will not be the same fighter if he shrinks down to 210 and does even an easy 10 pound weight cut. It will harm him. He will feel it. Very feel.
I completely agree with you. I hope he doesn't go down to CW, it would be a strange move IMO especially if Opetaia moves up as I think there isn't really much to offer at CW for Usyk's legacy, and as we saw with RJJ and Canelo, moving up and down weight can affect you negatively to an extent. The HW is the BEST division in boxing IMO. In terms of sport, it doesn't get better than top level HW boxing.
He definitely looks bigger. He’s planning to take a long rest, if anyone deserves a long rest I suppose it’s him. 242 is big tho lol he’s joining fury for dinners now?
At the risk of being banned at the request of my pal Cuchulain, I think Usyk should fight the winner of Parker-Dubois and head down to Bridger. He can beat Kevin Lerena and fight until he is 45 beating the Andrew Tabitis and Ryad Merhys of the world. Why not? He has nothing left to prove, and I would like to see him in a series of what would essentially be exhibitions. Plus, he can have fights against old rivals like Beterbiev and Nistor, there. Alternatively, he can fight in one of these leagues that don't count. I doubt he can do IBA, because it is controlled by Russians, but there has got to be another one out there.
