This is a fight that's been talked about since Usyk appears to be interested in moving up to Heavyweight soon and this seems like a fight that could happen in the forseeable future. This still might be a year or two away as Usyk first would have to commit to a move to HW and would probably need a tune-up at HW before stepping into the ring vs AJ. But just based on what you know now how do you think these two matchup what do you think would happen if they two guys fought?
Right now, Usyk is a sucker for a good jab and a lead right, Bellew proved that he can be outboxed with a well timed snappy jab and lead right. Big difference is that Joshua throws his with another 40-50lbs behind it. He wont be able to take as many as he did against a super heavy, so I see him being stopped inside 7 rounds.
Usyk will wear him down with speed and stamina. Punches slide off Usyk like butter.. they have no effect. Usyk will take joshua into deep waters and volume punch his head into oblivion while circulating joshua in 360 fashion. Nah im joking... AJ by KO
That's a good point and something that I've thought about as well. I think the one thing about Bellew is that he's crafty and has good upper body movement and is a good counter puncher particularly against the ropes. Joshua is a more upright fighter than Bellew. So in a way Bellew is a more difficult stylistic matchup for Usyk than Joshua is in the sense that he's smaller but can move out of range pretty quickly. At the same time Joshua is hard to hit in a different way because he's so tall and is so rangey. The question really is does Usyk possess the ability to land a shot on Joshua that will get him in the kind of trouble that Wladimir had him in for example. Can Usyk surprise Joshua with the kind of a shot that would drop him? Usyk's awkwardness will be a challenge for Joshua but I think Joshua will be able to control Usyk with the jab as he would have a significant reach and height advantage which is something that Usyk has never experienced before. Joshua I think would be able to get in and out with the jab pretty well and maybe when Usyk tries to get inside could try and time him with the right hand. I think I'd have to favor Joshua for obvious reasons but it would be a fascinating stylistic matchup for sure and I think it would be a great fight.
After the WBSS I picked Usyk to dominate at HW too..... He's beat a variety of styles, but has also shown vulnerability to different styles. He lost rounds to Briedis when going to war..... More worringly lost rounds to Bellew by being outboxed..... He stands a far better shot at Wilder.
As it stands based on recent performances, AJ blasts Usyk out in less than 9 rounds. Usyk needs 2 fights at HW before facing AJ, Wilder or Fury. He needs a top 50 and then a top 20 opponent to ease his way into it, adjust to the weight, and learn how to be more elusive as Haye was when he stepped up to HW. So Usyk does stand a chance but he needs atleast 2 learning fights and some work on his approach and tactics before this fight.
Usyk would have to make it a fast paced fight, make Joshua burn a lot of energy take him into the last 2 rounds and stop him. Can he avoid getting hit with big punches before then? 5 to 2 against it.
Usyk needs to warm his way into the division. The idea that he is somehow going to beat any super heavyweight next is laughable. Whyte, Joshua, T.Fury, Miller, hell probably even Joyce all KO him at this point. Usyk needs 2 200-230 opponents (Povetkin, Wilder/Pulev), 1 +6'6 opponent of exceptional quality (H.Fury), and then he might be ready for some big boys. Talk amatuers all you like, Usyk wont last 12 against the big boppers until hes atleast a solid 225 - 230. Feel free to use Adamek, Povetkin, Cunningham as good measuring sticks.
Since when was Joshua faster and more athletic than Bellew? Joshua is a plodder/bodybuilder and Usyk will capitalize on that.
