Leon Spinks? Leon Spinks would wipe the floor with Murat Gassiev? Errrrr ok then Yes. Yes they really would. Ali was poor in that fight. He was litterally fighting of off will. He was an absolute shell of what he was. Shavers seriously ended him. In fact he had signs of brain damage after the shavers fight. Eh debatable. You need to watch some actual life and death fights 31 is hardly the ghost of someone Qawi ain't whooping Briedis or Gassiev. This CW is the best it's ever been. Or close to it. Holyfield's era was hyped up era.
Usyk is starting in the heavyweight division at age 32. Holyfield entered the heavyweight division at age 26 and won the lineal heavyweight title at age 28. Usyk would have to beat a few pretty good heavies and then beat Tyson Fury to equal what Holyfield accomplished from CW to heavyweight.
Can I quickly point out how not one person has mentioned the spelling mistake in the thread title Sounds like how Adam Smith says it
Holyfield wasn't at CW long. I the short time that he was there, he defeated a HOF fighter in Qawi and a few other guys decent guys, but his career was mainly at heavy. He did enough to become the lineal CW champion by uniting the titles and beating De Leon to become the lineal champion, but the CW division wasn't one of the classic divisions. The lineal title for that division started in 1979. Holy finally beat De Leon to unite all 3 titles and become imo the first true lineal CW champion in 1988.
What would a guy who only started watching the sport a few years ago know about it? Im not all that familiar with Holys CW career myself and i suspect thats the case for a good few in this thread. Notably spud head who had no answer at all to Hookies post on page 1.
If you mean he's having his first heavyweight fight since he turned 32, you're correct. This will be his seventh professional heavyweight fight. He had six paid professional heavyweight fights in 2012 and 2013. You can watch them all in this thread. He won them all and a couple came against guys who are now ranked in the top 10. He looked fine. All the fights were announced as heavyweight fights. They announced the fighters as all being 91+ kilograms (which, in the amateurs is super heavyweight, so it wasn't the amateurs). They were three minute rounds, using 10-oz gloves and the 10-point must system (so it wasn't the amateurs). They weren't exhibitions. They were sanctioned, winners were announced based on the 10-point must system. More importantly, Usyk and his opponents were all paid (so it wasn't the amateurs). If you fight at heavyweight, and then you move down to cruiserweight, and then you move back to heavyweight, it's not your first heavyweight fight. People around here count every fight some pioneer had in a barn or a field if they can verify it through a random newspaper clipping. But you can post actual video of Usyk's professional heavyweight fights against big heavyweights, and people still argue with you that he's never had a heavyweight fight before. It's insane.
Oh bull I've been watching the cruiserweights since they were created. Briedis and Glowacki and Gassiev aren't even better then Orlin Norris, who beat heavyweight champs and won a cruiserweight title. Hell, they aren't any better than freaking Mormeck. And Norris and Mormeck aren't going down in history higher than freaking Leon Spinks, because Spinks won the world heavyweight championship from Muhammad Ali. There have been a lot of very good cruiserweight champs. This bunch Usyk fought isn't the best ever. Study up, rookie.
They definitely are. Ok then.... Spinks was a promising prospect who ended up a journeyman with a signiture win. That's it.
I'm familiar with his fights at heavyweight, but that has no bearing on this argument. They aren't on his record.
BULL!!!! Ali threw 97 punches in the 15th round of their first fight. 97 PUNCHES in the 15th round. And Spinks threw 87 punches in the 15th round. Not the 12th. Not in the WHOLE FIGHT. In the last round. Name ONE fight where Briedis, Glowacki or Gassiev threw 97 punches in ONE ROUND, let alone the 15th round. You're high. Get your head out of butt.
You can see them. They happened. They used to be on their total boxrec record, but they moved them to another page on the fighter's list of fights. If they aren't on boxrec main record page, then they didn't happen? Here. Watch it. They happened. Trust your eyes. Can you watch this and say Usyk never had a professional heavyweight fight before? This content is protected
I've seen a few of them as many of Usyks fans have posted them. Still they have no bearing on this argument.
They're all on this thread. I posted them all today. They happened. They were pro fights. Trust your eyes. Saying this is his seventh heavyweight fight instead of his first doesn't hurt Usyk at all. It's not a negative.
What the **** does this have to do with anything? Are you really trying to say that Ali was at or near his best for the Spinks fight? And since when high punch stats determine how good you were? I'd pick Gassiev and Briedis to beat Arreola and he just set a record for punch stats. In fact if they pass the big boy chin test I'd pick them to beat Kownacki
