Prime for prime who takes this? Jirov was an excellent high workrate guy with a lot of power and a great chin. Could he emulate what Hunter achieved and better it? Or does Usyk work him out and pull away down the stretch? This content is protected
Oh Jirov, so underrated. Right now Usyk is in a far tougher time for the division , but IMO Jirov breaks Usyk by combining his strength and skill (Jirov was also an olympic champion). But Usyk can face plenty of fighters in the division to change my mind if he beats them.
Very interesting. Unfair to judge since Usyk is early in his career but the Nistor fight is the opponent with the most similar style to Jirov and was a southpaw. It was competitive although Usyk won clear but over 12 rounds, high workrate, relentless pressure along with some of the most viscous body punching in the last several decades it's certainly interesting. I do think Jirov's feet were a little on the slow side in dealing with Usyk's footspeed and angles so i could see some of that volume being diminished through movement but it would be an excellent spectacle. Still disappointed Jirov didn't get to prove more at CW with a better era or at least the opportunity to fight the best in his own as it was so fractured. Gomez would have been a superfight.
Jirov relied on aggression, something Usyks countering and offense flowing from D would make look rudimentary. Im a huge Jirov fan, but Usyk dominates aggressive fighters. He's is dire need of one after back to back runners whom he literally had to chase around the ring outside his normal fight plan to get punches off.
Right now from what we've seen i'd favor Jirov Usyk is one inch taller, the same natural weight and took Mesi's punches no problem and he was a legit HW puncher. Usyk's got the speed advantage although the younger Jirov was much faster than he was towards the end of his career. Nistor and Beterbiev gave Usyk his toughest fights. Awkward or slippery guys like Mchunu and Hunter may make it look more ugly but you're not going to beat him that way. Is Usyk's countering better than Toney's cuz he certainly didn't thwart Jirov's aggression and that fight was much closer than the 9-3 cards. Had Jirov utilized his size, range and boxing ability along with controlled aggression in spots rather than commit himself to Thell Torrence's ******ed face first brawling strategy he could of won that. One of his earlier trainer's (Italian American guy) was always good at reminding him to be defensibly responsible and ensure he utilized head movement. For those of you who largely only remember Jirov from the Toney fight watch his speed, head movement, ability to dictate distance along with his savagery from his title winning effort against Williams. He wasn't the mindless face first brawler his horrid trainers like 'the legend' Thell Torrence turned him into. Watch at least the 1st round i guarenteed you'll be surprised at the difference. Toney was too stationary at that point of his career to just successfully counter a guy as big, mobile and fast as Usyk along with him being a southpaw which would make Toney's shoulder roll and counter less effective.
