Compubox is bull, Lewis looked sloppy his hands were too low to parry Mavrovic`s lead hand, he was very open to jabs.
I don`t give a crap about AJ now, Usyk is more skilled than AJ and is more skilled than Lewis was and his overrated era.
Watch the full fight Mark. Here I'll link it. Lewis lost 2 rounds at worst. The cards were WIDE. Judges and fan scorecards. You're just an idiot. Lewis would kill Joshua. Usyk beats Fury imo but Lewis was better on the front foot than Fury and Joshua and was more skilled offensively and more versatile in general. Usyk vs Lewis would be a close competitive fight. Galanto was more skilled than Wilder. And Fury has a size advantage over 90% of his opponents as well. Is that really critisism?
I am an admirer of Usyk for his willingness to fight and beat the best. He has done that so far and his win against AJ was expected in my judgement. If you want to compare Usyk to Joe Louis you need to make a lot of assumptions, which include: 1. Disregard how poor the current HW division is compared to historic eras. 2. Disregard that Louis is ranked near the top of ATG HWs consistently. 3. Disregard that Louis fought in a 15 round era where they fought a lot more frequently than today 4. Disregard that Louis fought in a great era for HWs when boxing was very popular and many more boxers were in the sport 5. Assume today's technology, training, peds make today's fighter's superior to all those in the past 6. Assume Usyk's limited HW resume extrapolates further 7. Assume that h2h Usyk has some stylistic advantages 8. Disregard their HW resumes In summary, any all time great HW list has Joe Louis higher than Usyk but if you want to selectively assume several salient criteria, then you may be able to justify a Usyk win. PS I find the modern vs historic comparisons difficult.
1. Compared to Louis's? It's more than competitive. 2. Irrelevant for this thread really. 3. Usyk's stamina is one of his key strengths so I doubt this would be a particular issue. 4. Louis fought in a HW era where most of his opponents wouldn't have been HWs today, or even CWs. 5. PEDs definitely aid in athletic performance. Training I think is mostly the same, in terms of effective methods. 6. What limited HW experience? He's had 19 HW fights if you don't include his WSB bouts (yes I'm including his CW run since all of them would be classified as HWs in Louis's day) 7. He has a ton of stylistic advantages. What stylistic advantages does Louis possess here? 8. Tricky one to contemplate, and perhaps not as relevant to a H2H contest as many think. But I agree it merits consideration.
The way Usyk fought AJ is exactly the way he should fight Louis, exactly, it's the perfect fightplan, Conn-heavy. Very, very, very difficult with Louis though.
I'd still dispute that. More canny maybe, but lacking that coordination or technique that Wilder has (not that Wilder is especially great in either category, but compared to Galento he is). It depends on how you classify skill though. Galento made better use of his meagre tools and tubby, unathletic body to get the best possible results he could achieve, while Wilder has mostly squandered his potential through ignorance and stubborn refusal to learn new things. Even so he was able to develop a few tools to a high enough degree to pose a danger to most world class opposition, namely his jab and his right hand. Galento never had a jab worth speaking about, his right hand made the worst of Wilder's windmills look coordinated, his left hook was basically an arm punch (though his best shot), and his uppercut was him literally raising his arm in the air. He also had no sense of distance and frequently smothered his shots, though this might have been part of his style, hard to say.
