When he was beating super heavies in the WSB, including against Medzhidov (guy who rocked Joshua all over the place and beat him, guy who starches 6’9 giants), and little Joe Joyce.

Check out the third round of this:

Here’s 215-220 pound Usyk against the same guy:

Except for that time Briedis knocked out Char. Or when Hunter upset Bakole.

Soundly outboxed? Why do you never back Parker... your avatar? I am more KIWI than you man...

Parker would give Usyk an extremely competitive fight.

I don't like this title, I'm changing it. Its a little too crude and classless IMO, I find all the kill and die talk in such a violent sport quite distasteful.

I would root for Parker, I just don't think this is a good match-up for him. It's heart vs head, in my heart I want to think Parker can win this sort of match, but my head tells me he doesn't have much of a chance, especially while he sticks with Barry.

Being a fan of Parker doesn't mean I should blindly ignore my judgement on him. I'm a loyal chap, so even though I don't rate him the highest I'll continue to support him.

Parker's strategy against good opposition is usually based on getting of first in exchanges with his speed against generally slower heavyweights and having a solid chin to take what comes back his way. That's a recipe for a lot of close fights, as we saw (Takam, Ruiz Jr, Fury, Whyte, and even the Joshua fight was close according to many). But with Usyk, he's very unlikely to win a decision without a KD or two as, let's face it, Usyk's technique is a lot better.

So Parker has to use his weight advantage here, but he isn't particularly good at doing that, neither is he the most powerful guy around. A solid chin is a great asset if fighting Wilder or Joshua, but it isn't really needed here.

    Styles make fights.

Whyte, for example, doesn't have as good a chin and was very close to getting stopped by Parker in the 12th round of their fight, but style-wise he's got a better chance against Usyk by making it rough and trying to bully the lighter man. Parker won't do that, he'll sit back and try to box until he's well down on the cards, and then (if we're lucky) launch an assault with whatever stamina he's got left. If we're not lucky he'll be thoroughly flummoxed a la Gassiev, and cruise to a UD loss without going for broke, similarly to the Joshua fight.

Watch Usyk vs Junior Fa and convince yourself that another 7 rounds wouldn't have changed a thing, and see what a challenge Parker would have on his hands.

I've seen the fight, but Parker is much more experienced than Junior FA... Usyk has 16 fights and he is talented... Parker has over 15 years experience in boxing, and that all translates to better timing and head movement over FA... so will be a handful for Usyk. Parker hits hard and with venom, as we saw against Whyte... that speed is a lot.

I agree that it depends on which Parker shows up... an aggressive stand and trade or the AJ dart and move around.

I agree that technically... Usyk has the better punch portfolio.

But Parker, he's speed... he's head movement... and he's granite chin will give Usyk a very hard fight.

Especially if he chooses to come forward and show no respect for Usyk's power, we've seen how weak Usyk is in these situations against the ropes.

Don’t think so. It would be a bit like the Bellew fight. Usyk wouldn’t respect his power and gradually break him down.

He wouldn’t be able to do that against Fury (size) or Whyte, Joshua, Wilder (power) and he’d have to adapt.

Against someone like Parker though he’d make him look a bit silly in my opinion.

I actually think Miller would be tough for Usyk, not due to boxing ability but the sheer size of Miller combined with his style and solid chin.

I actually remember, in real time, when similar arguments were being made about Evander Holyfield when he was coming up to Heavyweight. When he fought Micheal Dokes in 1989 those who seemed adamant that Holyfield was too small to compete, seemed pretty vested in a Dokes victory which of course never happened. In the end, Evander went on to become a great Champion.

I'm not calling Usyk a "Holyfield" but he's a pretty talented fighter who is skilled enough to compete at the highest level as a Heavyweight (at least in this era). If you think his size will hold him back I have 10 examples of why that's complete bull****:

    1) David Haye conceded 99 pounds against WBA Champion Nikolai Valuev in 2009. He beat Valuev anyway.

    2) Jack Sharkey conceded 59 pounds against Primo Carnera in thier first meeting in 1931. He beat Carnera anyway.

    3) Jack Dempsey conceded 58 pounds against Champion Jess Williard in 1919. He beat Williard anyway.

    4) Chris Byrd conceded 56 pounds in his IBF title defense against Jameel McCline in 2004. He beat McCline anyway.

    5) Joe Louis conceded 52 pounds in his title defense against Abe Simon in 1941. He beat Simon anyway.

    6) Sultan Ibragimov conceded 52 pounds against WBO Champion Shannon Briggs in 2007. He beat Briggs anyway.

    7) Joe Frazier conceded 39 pounds against Buster Mathis in 1968. He beat Mathis anyway.

    8) Roy Jones Jr conceded 33 pounds against WBA Champion John Ruiz in 2003. He beat Ruiz anyway.

    9) Tomasz Adamek conceded 33 pounds against Cris Arreola in 2010. He beat Arreola anyway.

    10) Micheal Spinks conceded 30 pounds against Gerry Cooney in his title defense back in 1987. He beat Cooney anyway.

If you think Oleksander Usyk doesn't have the talent or skill to make waves in the Heavyweight Division, then that's another argument. But if you acknowledge he's talented and think it's only a question of size? I'll be happy to take your money in a wager.

I highlighted the key parts, and in that I agree.

The thing is that Parker always comes to these big fights with Barry's idea of trying to win a slow-paced fight using his speed in occasional exchanges. He only goes for the kill when he's in with a no-hoper. Without that aggressive game plan he's going to get clearly outboxed, his speed is far from enough, his head movement is only OK in my opinion, and his chin isn't even going to be needed here.

For that reason, you see, I have no confidence in him vs Usyk. And to be honest, I guess I rate Usyk a bit higher than you do, I don't think weight is actually enough to compensate for the difference in talent.

Absolute classic title to this thread. People were really triggered after Usyk beat Bellew and talked about moving up to HW.
