Usyk Would be favoured on points against any heavyweight before 1970 ?

I can’t see say, Sonny Liston having to go 8 competitive rounds with an old Tony Bellew.
These Usyk and Crawford love ins have to stop. They beat Fury and Canelo, we got what we wanted from them, let’s give them their due, but let’s not go crazy.

I can think of pre-1970 heavies who had the style to give Usyk trouble. Here are just a few: Ernie Terrell is a bad match for him (awkward, dirty).. Cassius Clay/Muhhamad Ali (too fast). Jersey Joe Walcott (unpredictable, shifty, good power). Jack Johnson (strong with impenetrable defense.) I'd favor Joe Louis and Joe Frazier over Usyk.

 

No because a prime Joe Frazier and a prime Muhammad Ali are still in the late 60s.

 

Johnson's defense was impenetrable to wharfbrawlers and farmhands. It would be a drastically different story to someone like Usyk.

If fully one third of Journeyman Joe's foes beat him, I think Usyk can squeak by.

And though I hate to say it, I don't think Louis' feet can keep up with Usyk.

 

Ali peaked in the 60s, Frazier also has a shot against Usyk, but besides that yeah he deals with everyone pre 70s comfortably

 

I pick Ali, Liston, Frazier and Louis to beat him. Charles would be competitive, same as Marciano. If Chisora and Bellew can have plenty of success, They can too

I would favour him over most. I would certainly favour Usyk to beat any pre Louis heavyweight. I think Usyk is too skilled even for someone far ahead of his time like Dempsey.

Head to head, i would even favour Usyk over Joe Louis. That being said, Louis has the type of hand speed and 6 punch combinations that Usyk has never dealt with.

I would slightly favour Ali and Frazier over Usyk. Liston-Usyk is more like a 50-50 fight. However, in a triology with those guys, it wouldn't shock me if Usyk would win at least 1, if not 2.

While i agree Usyk is an incredibly skilled fighter, i do think some people in the general forum get carried away. Usyk isn't unbeatable. Breidis came pretty damn close to beating him. And i know the standard excuse is that Usyk went toe to toe with Breidis and that is why he struggled.

This isn't true. Usyk did try box Breidis off the back foot. But Breidis get nailing him with huge right hands through his guard. This forced Usyk to take a more agressive approach since he could not stay away from Breidis by boxing off the back foot.

I have always said that Usyk would have more trouble with men his size or smaller who have good power, are durable, have good defensive skills and/or reflexes, and have the stamina to keep up with him.

The big men like Joshua, Dubois, Fury etc. simply can't sustain that high work rate that 205 lb guys like Frazier can. But because of the bigger is better philosophy, people assume that since he can relatively easily handle big men, that he somehow could easily handle smaller ones.

So yes, i slightly favour Ali and Frazier over Usyk on points but it wouldn't shock me to see Usyk edging them. Liston-Usyk is an amazing 50-50 type fight. Even Louis and Marciano have a shot even though i think Usyk probably beats them H2H.

He is a generational great. Amazing fighter but some people go get carried away. He has created a wonderful blueprint on how to take advantage of the weaknesses of super heavyweights but as i said, its the cruiserweights who will give him a harder time.

 

Johnson was a pioneer but yes, he isn't beating Usyk. His clinching tactics will not work vs someone as strong as Usyk. He won't be able to bully Usyk.

And his tactics of catching punches in the air, one at a time, do not work vs a good combination puncher. I doubt he ever faced a good hard hitting southpaw. I am pretty sure Usyk stops Johnson.

 

I don’t think he’d have a chance in hell of beating Ali, either the lightning fast younger version or the older Zaire Ali

 

You do know that was only LIston's eighth fight as a pro ? ( yeah,I bet you do ! ).
