Wow, Haye/Usyk is a fight that I'd like to see. I made a thread on the possibility of it some years back and got some replies saying (along the lines of) Haye is out of Usyk's league. I always wanted to see Haye/Povetkin when they were closer to their peaks... but Haye was doing a Wilder impression for a few years, not really fighting anyone of note, just looking to cash out. I thought Povetkin would've beaten Haye then, and Usyk would do it now.
I always thought Haye would beat Povetkin. Haye was always better when fighters came to him and he'd walk Povetkin into a huge shot and stop him. I think Usyk would always be a tougher fight for Haye with his movement. Haye would have a punchers chance but he'd be fighting against a style that doesn't suit him and Haye is athletic enough to give anyone problems. Current Haye would get swept aside with little difficulty though.
Usyk needs to keep himself busy winning WBSS and fighting a tall HW whilst Wilder/Fury/AJ/Parker fight eachother for the lineal crown. Usyk is a massive threat. He is smaller, but at 6’2, 220, he is big enough. If Holyfield was, then Usyk is. Besides, he has so much more skill, footwork and boxing IQ than any of the current HWs. He won’t be a threat if he possesses the punching power and output of a Hughie Fury.
I always like to read your technical analysis on fighters. And you're probably right about Haye/Povetkin. I followed Povetkin since well before he went pro. so I'm a touch biased. It's one of those fights I just wanted to see go down regardless of who wins. It would have been super interesting to watch IMO.
I wouldn't compare Joe Joyce and some of the other SHW's Usyk beat in WSB to Joshua or even Wilder for that matter. Joshua especially is a different beast to Joyce and the rest, Usyk's skills won't be enough to hold him off for 12 rounds IMO I think he beats the likes of Parker, Povetkin etc though even now.
i don't follow the big lads so closely but that sounds about right--post-weigh-in, re-hydrating between about 7 - 12 pounds over the 200 lbs cruiserweight limit i just had a look--Usyk has the same height and wingspan as Haye and Holyfield if i recall correctly (and this is based on only a few fights for each) both Haye and Holyfield were around 215 lbs as HW. That made Holyfield a small HW in his day, but the big guys are only getting bigger. let's assume Usyk were to move up to HW and fight at 215 - 220; that's a very small HW, on the other hand, he would brings off-the-charts, alien skill to a division not used to seeing it.
Most of the posts on this thread are so useless. Who the **** Usyk ducks? Are you ******ed or what !? Usyk went to USA to fight Hunter, went to Poland to fight Glowacki, went to Germany to fight Huck and now he is going to Latvia to fight Briedis. He is fighting the top fighters in his division. What do you expect? If he wins the tournament there will be nothing left in the divison, maybe Lebedev as a super champion of WBA to unify all the titles. Plus Lebedev is getting old and it will be an easy job. He has the amazing opportunity to clean the division for only 15 or 16 fights. In 2019 we can expect him to move up among the heavyweights. One or two tune up fights against good gatekeepers would be perfect for Usyk. If you have a little knowledge about Usyk , you would know that he is way more efficient against bigger guys. For example many people saw how he struggled with the slick Mchunu. Mchunu was much smaller and faster than Usyk. Some people say that Usyk and Loma don't have enough power to finish their opponents. Well go and get hit by a 200 lbs Usyk and tell me that he doesn't have power. Both are great persons and interesting to follow. Check what they are doing daily , what their priorities in life are. Amazing sportsmen and example for the future! This summer I met some Ukrainian dudes in the US which told me they used to train in the same gym as Usyk. You have no idea what charisma this guy has. That's why people like Usyk and Lomachenko will dominate. I prefer a boxer that has to be a role model to be dedicated to his family and friends, than throwing money in Vegas and nicknames himself the "Money".
Haye's weight varied from 210-227¼ when he fought up at HW but he was as low as 210 for Wlad, Chisora, and Audley. Abel Sanchez said that Gassiev has done really well in sparring against HWs. “The power he has shown me in the gym sparring against [heavyweights Dominic] Breazeale, Charles Martin, Gerald Washington, Chris Arreola, is very real,” Sanchez said. “All those guys, he’s been able to dominate and hurt. Once we get him to the heavyweight division and stabilize him at 225, 230, and put some muscle on those pounds, he’ll be very effective. Usyk doesn't hit as hard as Haye and Gassiev but, as you say, he more than makes up for it in other areas. And he can punch a bit when he sits down on his shots too. Obviously he has to win the CW tourney first, which isn't a given as Briedis, Dorticos and Gassiev are serious business and they all hit extremely hard, but I think Usyk's speed of hand and foot, movement, athleticism, boxing ability, and ring IQ will pose real problems for all those lumbering giants up at HW. The thing that concerns me about a potential match up between him and AJ is the later has pretty fast hands for someone of his gargantuan dimensions so he'd stand a better chance of landing that bomb than the others would.
Usyk's will need a few warm up before Joshua, so a good bit of meat for a dog fight would be Haye & Bellew. There always telling us how good they are , well mostly Bellew, to anyone who can stay awake long enough to listen. So show us yer mettle you two half-wits & call Usyk's out ...the roaring silence will prevail! ETE: sorry kostya by ko I didn't see your post.
