I or II? Or both? After the knockout he technically went on to beat Malignaggi, although Paulie and most fans believe he was robbed in Houston. You could argue that Márquez I, Malignaggi I, Malignaggi II, and Márquez II ought to be an 0-4 skid for Torito (and certainly he was soundly outpointed in both rematches) - and while he did eventually return & stage a sputtering off-and-on comeback attempt between 2013 and 2016, it never really went anywhere. Good shout.
Eh, there might have been a couple of fissures in the basement walls after going twelve with the Siberian, but it was Manny who took a wrecking ball to Algieri's foundation and leveled his chances of having a lengthy prime.
I immediately thought that after I posted but was too lazy and hung over to delete or edit Long weekend at a KISS convention
I don't even think it was Manny so much as Algieri's own limitations. At 147, he lacked the physical luxuries he'd been able to utilize well against the 140lbers he faced and didn't have enough to make up for it in other departments. He was never going to be a top welter.
Was Khan pushed too early? I know some people think he was put in with punchers before learning how to defend himself properly.
Poli díaz vs pernell whitaker. Poli was 23 yo, 32-0 record, but he was just not ready to fight such a phenomenon. He was never the same and went to hell (and drugs) as fast as lightning, he just couldnt handle that, he should have never taken this fight. It's so important not to F UP as hard as fernando vargas and poli did, a fighter just cant afford to F up like that. If people call you coward or this or that, it doesnt matter, if you are not ready, you are not ready, period. I was young when fernando did that mistake, and I honestly still dont know what actually happened to him. I dont know if I got into the hype train too early because I was too young, or what the F happened. I swear I thought this guy was chosen for glory, I swear I thought that.
Maravilla martínez vs margarito. It didnt ruin maravilla, but, oh god, god knows that it could have ruined him badly. It is a CLEAR example of an "I'm not ready match", an "I'm about to screw up my future" match. Thanks god it didnt happened. A bit offtopic, but I just felt like to remember this match.
Btw, if Jonfer takes the Berchelt fight, there are odds that it will be another "ruination of young prodigy". Imho he's not still ready for a beast like berchlet.
