Although hes hoping to eventually fight Manny Pacquiao, former WBA superfeatherweight champion Edwin Valero said yesterday his respect for the Filipino icon will never wane because there isnt a classier act in boxing today. Valero and ex-WBC lightweight titlist David Diaz were flown in by Pacquiao from the US to attend his birthday party in General Santos City last Wednesday. They flew back home last night. Valero lives in Las Vegas and Diaz, in Chicago. Valero said he was touched by Pacquiaos gesture of checking on Diaz condition after scoring a ninth round knockout to wrest the WBC 135-pound crown in Las Vegas last June. Thats a class act, said Valero in Spanish through his travelling companion and interpreter Rafael Garcia Jr. Manny also showed concern for (Oscar) de la Hoya in their fight. Thats rare in boxing. Valero said beating De la Hoya affirmed Pacquiaos status as the worlds No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter. Right now, Mannys on top of the world, said Valero. Beating Oscar was something. Remember Oscars the guy who beat champions like Chavez and Gatti. Mannys wiped out the best Mexican fighters in his class and they werent pushovers. Last Sunday night, Valero and Diaz met up with Pacquiao at the Renaissance Hotel where they conversed for about an hour. They thanked Pacquiao for bringing them over. Businessman Hermie Esguerra took care of their Manila accommodations. He also sent them to Cebu for an overnight visit and brought them to the Santa Ana track to witness horse races. Valero said if given the chance, he can stand up to Pacquiao - even at 147 pounds. Watching a replay of Pacquiaos win over De la Hoya in a Cebu hotel last Saturday, Valero said he couldve beaten the Golden Boy as easily. De la Hoya wasnt fighting back, said Valero. Manny didnt need to defend because De la Hoya was hardly throwing punches. If I fight Manny, I know he can hurt me but I can hurt him, too. Valeros next fight is against Colombias Antonio Pitalua in Mexico in March. Top Rank chairman Bob Arum is arranging the interim WBC lightweight championship bout as Valero is ranked No. 1 and Pitalua, No. 2. The WBC continues to recognize Pacquiao as titleholder but it is likely the Filipino will give up the throne. Valero promised to dispose of Pitalua in five rounds. My real target is Juan Manuel Marquez, said Valero. I want him badly. There are four fighters in my list and theyre all with Golden Boy - Marquez, Michael Katsidis, Joel Casamayor and Juan Diaz. Ill take them out one by one. It would be an honor for me to fight in the undercard of a Manny main event. Valero said he hopes to fight in the Philippines in the near future. I love the Filipino people, he said. I want to give something back to them by fighting in their country. A Filipino businessman has offered to promote a Valero fight in Manila but the Pitalua bout in Mexico takes precedence. Because of his inability to secure a boxing license in the US except in Texas, Valero had to relocate to Tokyo in 2005 with his wife Carolina and children Edwin Jr. and Rosalie. He was under contract to Akihiko Honda but has been released and is close to signing with Top Rank. One of eight children, Valero grew up in the streets of Venezuela fighting in dark alleys. His father was a truck driver for 28 years and now, Valero is the breadwinner for his entire family. When he was a boy, Valero said he liked to beat up other kids in streetfights and knew he had power in his fists. I want to be like Manny, said Valero. I think if I just get the breaks like Manny, I can do what hes doing. Boxing is a business and if ever Manny gives me a chance to fight him, Ill be very grateful. Ill fight him anywhere, even in his house. I want to fight only the best. I know I can knock him out. Valero speaks little English but Garcia said hes working on improving his vocabulary and grammar. In Japan, he learned how to converse in Nihonggo out of necessity. Garcia said Valero will be able to project himself more easily in media if he speaks in English. _______________________________________ This guy is targetting all of GBP. I think Jack Presscot may have got himself a new favorite fighter now.
I've seen valero figth a few times. Tremendous power and a good combination puncher. I thought he had brain bleeds and no one would sanction him?
wow, valero looks fat in your avatar lol. I think his approach and strategy in securing a fight with pac is clear. Beat JMM, the last guy to have troubled pac, maybe even beaten pac, and he can get a tremendous boost in terms of credibility. But with the present level of JMM, valero will lose unless jmm becomes old overnight. Valero has a punchers chance though
Valero will knock J.M.M out. He is just too strong for J.M.M at this point in time. I love J.M.M. but his time is almost up. He has aged like fine wine, but he'd better stay away from Valero. If J.M.M were to beat Valero...man I'll have to wait and see if it happens to comment on it.
Now that would be something, eh? It would be the best way for Marquez to end his career. What a victory that would be.
Well Pitalua is ranked top 10 by The ring and WBC. I think people are really underestimating the excite factor in this fight, Pitula knocked out his last 14 opponents, inculding Santa Cruz and has an 81 KO precentage. People are ragging Valero he may not have a sturdy chin from the Mosquera fight, but he will be strongly tested in this fight.
Beating a superb boxer/puncher in his prime. That would be big imo no matter how inexperienced some might think Valero is.
Valero would be a bad move for JMM. The right type of young fighter to beat him. I think Valero could win it too. Big risk for Marquez especially since he wants to fight Pac again so bad.
Had to search the internet for verification. This guy could easily die in the ring. He can't get sanctioned in the USA. looking forward to seeing him box on HBO Latino in January, 2004, but an irregularity showed up on his New York commission brain scan and he admitted that he had suffered bleeding on the brain after being involved in a motorcycle accident in Venezuela in 2001, when he was riding without a helmet. Valero says that a brain operation was not required, but he was denied a licence in New York, which effectively means the whole of the U.S. He simply continued to knock people out overseas — in Latin America, Europe and Japan.
Yup, inexperienced or not, that would be a big win no doubt, and it would further establish JMM as a truly great fighter. But as you said, it would be a really tough fight, Marquez is on the decline and Valero is very strong and dangerous.
JMM > Valero as of right now. Valero is like Pac of 2003. relentless and powerful. But a come forward like Hatton. JMM has the best blueprint for it. But I won't underestimate Valero's KO power against the top elite at some point.
I'd love to see Valero fight a top 10 135lb fighter...I wanna see him up against true talent...I think he's incredibly strong and he puts his punches togeather very well...I cant say he could beat JMM right now because JMM is #3 lb for lb and looked good in his loss to Pac...but I'd love to see the fight!
There is a very good chance this fight happens, I'll pick JMM to beat Valero, just too skilled and experienced. JMM was able to handle Pac's power, which I would say is classes above Valero's, so I don't see how Valero's power will be enough to win this fight. If anyone gets KO'd in this fight then it's Valero in my opinion.
