f****news WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero (25-0, 25 KOs) has denied that he will fight contender Breidis Prescott on July 25th. “No one from Top Rank has discussed me fighting (Breidis) Prescott or me fighting on July 25th,” stated Valero. “The first time that I learned of the Prescott fight was when someone in my camp informed me that the fight was listed on the internet.” Valero had hoped for a unification megafight with WBO and WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez but Marquez was recently announced as the foe for Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his July 18th comeback. “I only want to fight big names for big money,” outlined Valero. “A fight with (J.M.) Marquez for all of the titles would have been a big fight for big money but the fight is no longer possible. Prescott is not a big name and a fight with Prescott is not a big money fight.” apologies if its been posted already
As I said in another thread related to his, Valero is an idiot for declining this. He doesn't have a SINGLE major win on his record to demand big money fights, you got to earn it like all the rest did. This was going to bring him big fights, a win over Prescott almost guarantees a fight with Khan in the future which IS a big fight.
Valero has done nothing to deserve "only big name" fights. Prescott is a hot prospect, a win over him would be a big boost to his career. Who else is he going to fight right now?
valero reminds me of a young nigel benn...he thinks an awful lot of himself... he may have to take a fight or two while waiting for his big money paydays and may just walk into a modern day michael watson.
He didnt reject it, he just said that no one from Top rank has discussed this fight with him. I think that if the promoters agree, then they will fight. Of course Valero wants the big names, who doesnt?
From: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=19720&more=1 "I only want to fight big names for big money," Valero said to FightNews. "A fight with [Juan Manuel] Marquez for all the titles would have been a big money fight but the fight is no longer possible. Prescott is not a big name and a fight with Prescott is not a big money fight." Ouch. I was really looking forward to this as it could have been the fight that lead to bigger names for both fighters :-(
He's not well known outside boxing hardcores and, as far as I know, is still not able to box in most US states, so I don't see how he's in any position to be demanding big money fights.
what a ****nut. You wanna fight big names? And who do you think the big names wanna fight? Your sorry ass?
Jeff M, you know, the guy who gargles Valero like it going out of style...tried to claim it had to do something with TV rights. Of course, he REFUSES to say what it is. atsch
This reminds me of Junior Witter vs Demetrius Hopkins - everyone thought the fight was on until Hopkins claimed that no-one told him.
