fair enough despite the blooper. Valero was well received and well liked here in our country.

That's cool. Perhaps he meant the president had him checked but it did happen. It was through a translator so it could have been misinterpreted. I don't speak Spanish as good now. I use to understand it better.

You do realize though that it is almost unheard of for a fighter to be completely shot at Vargas' age though? I mean he already shows signs of slurring words and things. There is maybe a handfull of fighters that have ever been that bad that early.

boxing is and will always be a dangerous sport. that is the reality of it.

as much as we do not want our fighters to get hurt, us fans are also as equaly guilty of promoting the sport by sometimes paying good money to see two fighter beat each other.

advances in medicine and other precautionary measures have been placed but still, the primary purpose is to hurt the other fighter. sooner or later, the damage will show.

Most fighters show some pugilistic dementia late in age but Vargas was an extreme case. There was a thread about it a few days ago.

I haven't noticed much non-Jeff cheerleading for Valero - is there a groundswell of fanboy support I've overlooked? I give him the benefit of the doubt on the doctor gaffe... it's amazing how many people I've bumped into think all Filipinas are nurses. :nut "Hangers-on," though, is quite an unfair term for the causes Manny gives money to. Besides, it's not like his entourage is full of nepotism and no-show jobs (something we know well here in NJ); those bodyguards definitely earn that pay!

All three fighters have had vastly different attitudes and mindsets, so it's hard to contrast and compare.

    - I agree on Valero: we'll probably never know how great he could really be, since there aren't all that many years left for him to physically improve.
    - I always thought Vargas had such a huge chip on his shoulder that it would blind him against anyone who wouldn't simply stand toe-to-toe with him.
    - Pacquiao's a friggin' wunderkind. If his overcoming of early losses leads to the evolution we've seen in his boxing and comfort level, where's his political career going to end up? I have absolutely no idea how he holds up under all that pressure when he's back home. He's always going to be beatable, just like Valero and Vargas (though, of course, in quite different ways), but his mindset and fanbase is too broad to crumble all at once from the inevitable defeats.

vargas was a waste but to compare valero to vargas in this stage of his career is stupid. vargas might not have achieved his full potential but at least he fought the best during his time. who has valero beat in fact who has he fought? Tomato cans and taxi drivers!

true. true. but i hope the stupid comment was not meant for me. ;)

a bit sad really that vargas failed to reach the peak or it was just his misfortune to fight in an era dominated by great lightweights to welterweights. I mean fighting in an era wherein the prime tito, dlh, wright, mosley, quartey, joppy and a host of other fighters rough fighters can be tough.

and that thing is vargas fought the best in his class. he just did not have it in him to go toe to toe with the technically gifted fighters at the strong time strong punchers.
