Valid excuses for a loss, examples? I always felt Barry McGuigan fighting Cruz in Vegas played a big part in why he lost. My theory was, that Barry was a fighter who relied on his activity, where as Cruz seemed more of a counter puncher, so when Barry won a round, he would have to expend more energy in order to win the round, where as Cruz was able to be more economical cause of his style, and conserve more energy, which played a massive part down the stretch of the fight imo. Do you have any examples?
Riddick Bowe's momentum being messed up during the fight by Fan Man while he had been having a good 7th round (he had taking a shellacking in round 5 and also lost round 6). Also, his pregnant wife leaving the arena on a stretcher couldn't have helped. Eder Gonzalez being robbed by a corrupt ref in the first Juan Coggi fight. Rodrigo Valdez's brother being murdered one week before Valdez fought Carlos Monzon. Of course it didn't really matter much in the result since Monzon won the rematch. Carlos was the better fighter.
TS, just out of curiosity, you think he would of won had that not happened, whats your thoughts on that bud?
I don't know, it's tough to call. While Holyfield did have a strong previous 2 rounds, Bowe was doing well in that round. He seemed to be getting a second wind. For a guy who often didn't train that hard, Bowe had excellent workrate and natural stamina. Then again, maybe that rest did help Bowe. He was getting a second wind, but that break also gave him more time to rest, period (and Holyfield as well). At the end of the fight, Bowe certainly finished stronger with a very good 12th round. I think regardless of Fan Man, it remains a very close decision with one round being the swing round. Maybe Bowe takes the razor-thin decision without Fan Man, or it stays the same. But if it helped anyone, I think it was Evander. Bowe being rocked late in round 5 doesn't convince me that Holyfield was going to stop him a couple rounds later, especially when Holyfield was losing that round. I watched it a couple months ago and had Evander winning by a point. I think what really hurt Bowe was that he lost a couple of rounds (I think 9 and 10, maybe 10 and 11) because Holyfield stole the rounds late with flurries by outhustling him and that made the difference on the cards. Those were very close rounds up to that point.
I've heard how his corner told him to stay away, but whenever I've watched the fight and listened to his corner in the late rounds, all I heard was them telling him "box, box, box". One of them, I think Alcazar, told him "make sure they know you won the round". I think this story of how Oscar just followed their instructions to stay away is revisionist history. Oscar himself says his legs were very tired and shaking, so maybe it was best to stay away and not risk getting caught with a big Tito shot.
Yeah I would agree with that, it certainly helped him more than Bowe, when you consider the game plan he was employing, which was moving consistently, which obviously takes more energy. I have'nt watched it for a while, but I seem to recall Bowe holstering his jab for a while in the fight, only when he used it, it seem to work, you think Holyfield's movement offset it, or that he just got away from it?
