Yes, he did slightly improve, but that's not enough. His biggest problem is that he's too slow and lacks power.
I agree, his jab looked sharp throughout the entire bout. His right hand got through quite a few times. His defence also improved significantly. If you watch their first fight, you'll frequently see Ruiz coming in and landing the right hand or even a combination (as did Donald), but during this fight, it was mostly right before/during a clinch that Johnny landed the spare punches he did. I had it 116-113 Valuev. The point deduction was a bit of a surprise to me as he hadn't warned him for it the last four rounds or so. He also never said anything about Ruiz hitting on the break, which he did over and over.
I don't care if you call it praise, or not. If I see a new facet to a fighter's game that will help him win fights, that is worthy of a mention.
Yeah, that's a good point. In previous fights he seemed to paw with it late on. Perhaps his stamina has improved.
People are mad because you can not win close fights in Germany. After Donald, Ruiz I , he gets the nod again.
That was not much of an improvement to be honest. Ruslan Chagaev would've picked him apart last night.
I also believe Chagaev would have TKO'd him late if he was in there against him, Valuev was really tired late and barely threw any punch worth mentioning.
A heavyweight championship fight is no time to be developing one's craft. Valuev gets no credit for that, although he did improve. The dude still fights like he doesn't have every statistical advantage in the book on his side. European heavyweights, I swear :-( (Sorry, Lennox). I just wanna scream at that dude like, "Look man you're 5 hundred and 40 pounds!!! Where the **** is your power???" He can learn a thing or two from Butterbean about how weight - when used effectively - generates power. At least it wasn't jab-n-grab. Ruiz got jobbed.
Some "highlights," if you will, for those "interested" . . . and I use both the terms "highlights" and "interested" very loosely. [YT]Gy5uh25TyaM[/YT]
What's Wlad supposed to do? Knock every opponent out in the first round? Wlad has been squaring off against top ten rated fighters for years now and wiped the floor with them. His only subpar performance was against the elusive southpaw and co-champion Sultan who Wlad beat basically with his jab. He knocked senseless two fellow giants in Austin and Thompson who both outweighed Wlad. Wlad, by any standard, has been a dominant champion since slaughtering Byrd. Before that he outboxed Peter. You're an obvious hater and about Ruiz giving Wlad a tough fight. Dream on.
Why? You think Jeffries, Lewis, Ali, were all the finished article whilst challenging fot the title? I agree that he improved, and that he doesn't use his size properly yet - yet. If he could do that, it would be interesting. You got to wonder why he can't get a trainer to help him with this.
This is a great post. Boxing isn't about grab your opponent and leaning on him. If you want a grabbing contest watch MMA.
Effective clinching is a big part of the boxing game. McGrain is just pointing out that a tall, huge fighter like Valuev is slowly but surely learning how to use his height and weight advantage properly in the clinches to wear down his opponents like other tall successful heavy's have done in the past.
