I think people will like him better if he didn't look like Big Foot. He needs to be sponsored by Gillette and shave all that hair off.

i have followed valuev since the begginning of his career when he fought out of the uk for a while and since i followed him on the various european channels on tv as he progressed

for basically that whole time all i have heard from his detractors is first that
    he is ****

then it went to as soon as he steps up

then it went to as soon as he has been hit on the chin he will go

until now when he has proven he is legit fighter/does have abilty/does have a great chin/is competitive v everyone it is down to he is ugly/hairy and lacks power.

ugly and hairy is for shirt lifters to care about

lacks power can be said of 70% of world class boxers at the top level.

I don't think he's hated, but I think most heavyweight fans are indifferent to him, and are unexcited by him.

I think, given his immense size, his lack of KO power is what most find disappointing in him.

His fights are usually boring affairs, cause he also has a great chin, and when coupled with his own lack of KO power, you are pretty sure that nonone will be knocked out in a Valuev fight, unless he's in with a low level opponent.

I think if he were to start to put more of an upperbody, twisting, follow-through movement to his right hand shots, and use his legs, as well, he may have all kinds of KO power. At least, you'd think he would have, given that he's just shy of 7 feet, and is somewhat muscular.

As far as I'm concerned an unbeaten record is irrelevant. Yeah Marciano fought good fighters and Valuev hasn't really, so what? If Valuev did reach 50-0 people would still consider Marciano's achievement greater, and rightly so. Just like it's right that people considered what Ali achieved greater than Marciano's achievement.

I simply don't understand why Marciano's numerical record is revered so much. It's stupid beyond belief.

No,it's not stupid beyond nelief,a guy who hasn't shown the heart, the will or skill of Marciano to beat his record is a shame to boxing altough like you said Marciano achievment would still be considered bigger but it's just wrong that Valuev to be the guy that beats his record

I don't like Valuev, he isn't exciting to watch, isn't a very good fighter (though improving and with a good jab, especially for such a freak of nature), and I also think he lost more fights than his record indicates Larry Donald, Ruiz I). He would never have become a belt-holder but for these robberies. And Ruiz II and Bergeron were very close fights, could have gone either way.

BUT I will say something positive about Valuev here now: he is an active fighter and fights about three times a year. Maybe not always top competition, but that's Sauerland and Kings decisions. That's more than Wlad or Peter, or Chagaev for that matter...

There is much worse, like Fields or Guinn. I think Valuev shouldn't fight so timid, he should go right after his opponents. Ruiz for some reason though is tough for anyone to KO now. That hugging tactic is really working I guess. I thought Toney was going to KO Ruiz, but he didn't.

Maybe if Valuev really tried to attack his opponents, people would give him more respect. He rarely KOs people anymore. I know the competition rises as you get closer to belts, but the fact he didn't KO Ruiz, I question his drive to KO and meanness. If I was his size, I would be mean and try to knock everyone out, like Foreman. He might get KO like Fields, but at least go down with your boots on.

Because noone else in the history of heavweight boxing has ever
equaled Marciano's record of 49 wins with no defeats. The guy fought
the best that his era had to offer, fought various styles of boxers,
had some close calls and gruelling fights but NEVER lost a single fight.
Is it clear now why the man is so respected by legions of boxing
fans? Has the penny finally dropped?

Nobody roots for the Goliaths. Only the Davids. I've been a big critic of Valuev for a long time but even I admit that he can fight a little. It is a little strange to see someone that big use the jab to win fights.

ah.... Ruiz would be the most hated fighter in the history of the sport, with Kabary Salem coming in close second by those who know who he is.

    Hardly - I don't mind him - but he's hardly inspiring either.
