Who was more highly regarded going into their first super fight - Vargas against Trinidad, or Cotto against Mosley?

Vargas. As I remember it, many thought that kid could whip Tito.

Interesting thread. Im going to go with Vargas. He had wins over Quartey, Winky, Marquez and Yory Boy.
There was a sizable minority that thought he could knock off a p4p star in his prime in Tito.

Cotto was still establishing himself and Shane was fading, had 4 losses and arguably out of his best weight. Even with all that there were still a lot of people that thought Mosley would take that fight.

For a newcomer (see, I'm avoiding the term "noob", sign of respect), you make good threads, I must admit. :D

I'd go with Vargas on this one.

You should learn to add polls too though. :deal

Vargas fought in a tougher era I guess then because he wasn't in the top 3 P4P and Cotto was pretty much, definitely top 5. But at that time there were just much more talent in the sport, Jones, Hops, Tito, Hoya, Mayweather, Coralles, Castillo, Barrera, Morales, Mosley, Wright....etc etc all those guys were on top of their games.

But Vargas was very highly regarded.

He was stomping him on a few occassions and Tito decided to blast his ballsack every time Vargas gained momentum. He also illegal wraped his hands.

Well actually, im gonna go with that i think Cotto was a little higher regarded.... Cotto i believe was top 7 or so p4p...

Vargas (and people like to forget this) was #9 p4p going into the tito fight i believe.... or around that time at least.

Vargas would beat up Cotto. This fight would have to take place at 154. Vargas would be too big and strong for Cotto.

ah ****... i thought this was going into the margarito fight, not the mosley fight... doesnt change MUCH but still, it does matter.... as i picked Mosley to beat Cotto and Cotto proved me wrong.

I still say i think Cotto was probably a little more touted going into the Margarito fight (again... The Ring has him #9 even with his loss to margarito as Vargas had going into the Trinidad bout, and never to see again afterwards)

But if were talking the mosley fight, i think a lot of people still had a lot of questions about cotto... which is why so many people picked Mosley to win, so ill say Vargas for that.
