Winky had an amateur career, and was was a pro over 9 years before this fight. It was his 42nd pro bout, and he achieved many great things after this loss.
Yeah it was very underrated. And the talk of Winky being "robbed" is kinda crazy to me. It was a close fight and Vargas finished extremely strong. Too bad he was never the same after the Tito fight.
That was a win that didnt really mean much at the time but ended up meaning more over time. However I did not have Vargas winning that fight......
Vasquez and Simon beat Winky at world level too, and those guys get zero credit. But Winky is a great example of how having a couple of setbacks should not mean the end of the world. This being washed up as soon as you lose your "0" is one of the cancers of the sport these days.
That was a helluva fight. Vargas gave it his all but I felt he lost 7-5. Why Wright always tries to coast it out in the last few rounds is beyond me. He literally always does this :-(
That drove me crazy in the Jermain Taylor fight. I was hyped up as hell. Winky came out in the business suite and was taking it to Taylor. It was a close fight and he chose to take the final round off. Have never understood why certain fighters do this. Just because you think your winning, still go out in the 12th and make a statement.
Its a win that grew in stature with time and with what Winky went on to achieve, its an underrated win not only is the best win of Vargas career its also one of the best wins of the last 15 years but its rarely mentioned when people discuss the best wins of the last couple of decades. As for the fight itself i also think its a very underrated fight who rarely gets any love around here. Both fighters giving their all in what i would call a skillful war, the fight was very close and pretty much even going to the championship rounds but Vargas late rally coupled with Winky taking the foot of the pedal in the last two rounds was enough to earn El Feroz a hard fought close decision IMO. Its a closet classic and one i would advise anyone who hasnt see it to check it out specially those who think Winky was a boring fighter, in here he proves that against the right opponent he could put on a great fight.
Still thought he won the fight, but I was a little biased. Couldn't stand all the hype Taylor was getting from HBO at the time.
Winky should have already known that going in. I also hated the fact that he turned down the rematch. The first fight was great and the rematch would have been as well.
I agree, Winky pissed away his talent and the chance to make a lot of money. Loved the dude in the ring, but he really thought to highly of himself when it came to negotiating fights.
