I remember leading into the Gatti-Ward fight we all knew damn well that neither guy was a significant player in the weight class. We knew they were both past their best and we didn't care. We all tuned in because we knew we would get an amazing fight and we witnessed something special.

Same thing will happen this time. :deal

That's how we picture it in our heads.

The problem is i just dont think we will see the Vargas of old.

No, the Vargas of old would've probably whooped Mayorga accordingly. The Vargas of today makes for a much more competitive fight for El Matador. :yep

The problem is that neither can take the punishment that Ward and Gatti were able to take in their fights.

I see an early KO and a dissapointing fight. I see both being rocked and Vargas being KOd because he is no longer able to take an even decent shot.

I hope this is a gatti ward style fight. Mayorga knows how to sell a fight and if he sells it well enough this could some what make up for lack luster De La Hoya/ Mayweather. not in sales, but hopefully SOME FANS will watch and they will go to WAR.

I think Mayorga takes this fight. Vargas was once the more skilled, more talented fighter.

But the intangibles go to Mayorga now, he stays in better shape and doesnt balloon like Vargas. He plans to fight on beyond this fight, and Vargas does not. He has a better chin than Vargas ever did. I just see Vargas going down quick in this fight. He is no longer really a fighter, nor does he live the fighter lifestyle.

I don't know about that.... Vargas can take a pretty good beating. I can see how the second Mosley fight would make one question Vargas' ability to take a beating, but I still think we're going to see Vargas give every ounce he's got, especially since this will probably be his last fight.... and if he loses it'll definitely be his last fight.

As far as Mayorga goes, there's still a question mark over what he's got left, in my opinion he would've lost to Trinidad and De La Hoya at any time in his career, so this shouldn't be an indicator that he's finished. And, as you've said.. he's kept himself in good shape.

I remeber a couple months back there was a thread titles something like ¨who pimped vargas the most, DLH or Trinidad¨, and someone replied that his management pimped him the most. Its really a shame what happened to him. Its partly his fault, he was constantly in legal trouble and his people wanted to cash him out before he hit the slammer. But still, he should have never been put in with Trinidad (edit: at that point in time).

I just checked boxrec...didn't realize Vargas was only 29. That's what happens when you take beatings from great fighters and don't take care of yourself. I want him, and am picking him to win, but I really don't know how far he has fallen. A Mayorga win wouldn't be surprising to me one bit.

Ward-Gatti? I don't see it becoming that great, but it can become an excellent fight.

It always makes for an exciting fight when you've got two guys coming off bad losses, and nearing the end of their careers taking on one another. They've got everything to prove and everything to lose. You've got Vargas who claims he wants to retire after this fight, so you've gotta figure that he'll want to leave the sport on a high note.

Mayorga on the other hand seems like he wants to continue on with his career, but will definitely need a win over someone like Vargas if he wants to have any more big opportunities. I expect both men to definitely fight like it's their last fight.

" For Pride " indeed. :good

I hope Mayorga wins. Look at the pics he is in better shape than Vargas, and belive it or not a better sportsman. Vargas is a sore looser and sour person. Mayorga talks smack to sell a fight, but imo Vargas speaks smack from the heart. Vargas has injuires and Mayroga dont. I hope I get 2 see the same little frown on Vargas face in the post fight interviwe that I saw in the 2nd Mosley fight!

Vargas back is still an Issue. Oh and he's been in training since Jan and he's already down to 183lbs. Wtf....

I am excited about this fight but I think we'll end up with a disappointing KO victory by Mayorga. Vargas has said this is his last fight whether he wins or loses, so it's pretty obvious he doesn't really give a **** about performing at his best level and probably just wants one last payday before leaving boxing again.
