Tremendous punching contest - I got this one... Vargas was a tremendous warrior and Quartey didn't lose this one like he did to Hoya. I like Vargas and Tito better tho.
BUMP! This fight came across my mind a couple of weeks ago when Raul Marquez was talking about what it was like to face Vargas in his prime during Latin Fury PPV. Finally got around to rewatching it last night. This is a criminally underrated fight. Great action and high skill level. I'm surprised it gets so little mention. :bbb
Wasn't Ike coming off a lay off? I actually haven't seen this fight but just watched a couple rounds and can't believe Vargas wasn't floored like he was so easily the rest of his career.
Vargas pre-Tito had a pretty sturdy chin. But yeah, Quartey had been off for over a year. Still made a really good account of himself. Round 6 was the ****. :bbb
I love the fight tbh,Vargas was one of my favs and I liked Quartey a lot aswell. Nando's best W and performance prolly. Vargas vs Wright is an underrated fight aswell IMO.
Quartey even dropped Oscar, and had some bombs, so not being able to drop Vargas is quite impressive. Did Tito really hit that much harder? Or did Tito really wrap those hands?
:huh I disagree. I thought Vargas beat Quartey more convincingly than Oscar did. I had Vargas winning this 116-112 where I Had Oscar beating Quartey 114-113. I saw the Vargas- Quartey fight live even went to Vargas after Party at THe House of BLues in the Mandalay Bay.
Quartey hadn't fought in 14 months, since the De La Hoya fight, in which Quartey hadn't fought in 16 months. Then after losing to Vargas, Quartey didn't fight for 5 years. Needless to say, Ike wasn't the most active fighter.
