i dont remember ledermans card... but i think he had wright up by one round, or vargas up by one round... or a draw.

Fernando Vargas emerged victorious in easily his toughest fight so far, a fight that Vargas could've lost.

It was a very close and very tough fight for Vargas, but Vargas did what he had to do to win. He was facing a determined southpaw who uncharacteristically became the agressor against Vargas. Wright was backing Vargas up for a lot of the fight, scoring effectively with his right jab and left hand.

Vargas didn't allow Wright's determination to frustrate him. Vargas showed a lot of patience and heart in this fight and scored effectively with his own power shots to the body and head.

It developed into an extremely even bout with both men fighting a good fight.

I scored the bout 115-114 in favor of Vargas, but could've seen Wright taking the fight. Wright said he was robbed, but I disagree. Yes, Wright could've been given the decision, but the fight was very even and could've gone either way. There was no robbery. Some boxing insiders would've argued that he didn't take the title away from the champion and would've given the close rounds to the champion. I personally don't do that, but I still gave the fight to Vargas by a point.

Both fighters were very impressive. Wright increased his stock with an outstanding effort while some may criticize Vargas for eeking out the win.

I give praise to both fighters equally. Wright, for stepping up and giving a gutsy performance and Vargas, for showing the determination and patience of an experienced veteran with under 20 fights as well as for closing the show like a true champ.

There was nothing bad you could say about either fighter. It was a close fight with both fighters giving it their all. There were no real losers in this fight.

Yea, if you read the Jt fight with Pavlik and didnt see it they all thought that JT was winning until Pavlik stopped him. We all know that wasnt the case. Vargas was favored the same way back then.

I laugh at fans like you who think just cuz YOU scored the fight a certain way... when its ****ing OBVIOUS that there are PLENTY of people who scored it for the OTHER guy, including boxing fans that you can see here on esb on this very thread, respected boxing insiders and writers like doug from mxboxing, and others, but only YOURS counts, and that because so its a robbery. ive watched it a million times...

I re-watched the fight last night and my card remains the same as it was when I first saw it 7-5 Wright. Winky he landed the cleaner shots and blocked a lot Vargas' punches. They gave it to Vargas because he was suppose to be the next hot thing in boxing but in reality anyone who knows how to score a fight knows Winky won.

JT has how many close/questionable decision?
Hopkins 1, hopkins 2 maybe... and Wright....

vargas had how many decisions?

LOL!

how can you say he was FAVORED... when before wright he had never even went the distance?

you ASSUME he was favored by the judges... again... ASSUME.

There are plenty of non biased fans to go along with that decision to back up the fact that it wasnt a robbery.

If i'm not mistaken, they are going to play this fight on ESPN Classic within the next few weeks. I can't wait to watch it as i have never seen it.

I dont see why its hard to believe vargas in his prime beat wright.... vargas had everything needed TO beat wright. He could box going forward or backing up, had power in both fists, through punches in bunches when not wanting to box behind his guard, had good footwork and tight defence, put up incredible offensive output in where it wouldnt be out of the ordinary for him to put up 85-95 punches a round to win it.

He beat wright in a back and forth battle (good fight btw) that saw him winning more rounds then wright... they fought in close a lot of the time that saw vargas digging to the body.

Imo... that wright was much better then the one we see today (against taylor and hopkins) and of course vargas was much, much, much better then too.

He gave rounds that Winky clearly won to Vargas and Vargas' rounds to Winky.

Have you ever seen Vargas fight in his prime? The guy was an absolute beast. His win was controversial, but it is by no means unbelievable that he was able to compete with Wright :deal

I watched parts of Vargas vs. Yori Boy last night. Vargas was pretty damned good in his younger years.

Just because there are worse decisions doesn't mean that one wasn't bad. I had it 117-112 for right (one even, obviously). Clear win for Winky. He didn't win every round and Vargas didn't do next to nothing like Cassa/Cruz, but he sure as hell didn't win NEARLY enough rounds to pull that one out. That's also the fight where Lampley and the other clowns started that bull**** myth that Winky faded late; not so. He CLEARLY won the 11th round.

Anyway, to the guy that started the thread, find a copy of the fight on any of the boxing related bittorrent sites and watch it for yourself WITH THE SOUND OFF. Then if you want a laugh, watch it again with the sound on.
