for real man? i always figured it was like Vargas-wright, mosley oscar 2, and all other close fights where people always say robbery cuz the guy THEY thought won or rooted for didnt win... you really thought it was a robbery? i have GOT to watch this fight... no excuse not to. i guess because i know he rematched and beat him, that i dont, but ill give it a go one of these days.
My scorecard: Vargas won rounds : 1, 3, 4, 7, 10, 12 Winky won rounds : 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11 Where is the robbery in my scorecard ?
Had it a draw (114-114). Too bad they should've polished Vargas a bit more before sending him against guys like Tito or DLH. I wonder what would've happened.
I watched this fight last night and found it to be quite enjoyable and difficult to score. I scored the fight 115-113 for wright but I can easily see this fight being a draw or a 2-3 point win for vargas. for the first 8 rounds the fight followed a basic pattern: winky would march forward jabbing his way in and landing jabs and the occasional left, while vargas was backing up and landing thudding body shots and head shots that winky was easily blocking with his excellent guard. during the final 4 rounds vargas began to back winky up and winky's output went down and vargas seemed to be the agressor even though most of his power shots were blocked. Thus winky was moving forward and landing cleaner shots for the majority of the rounds but vargas was throwing many bombs, most of which did not land. This is the classic style matchup that is diffcult to score. personally i appreciate winky's come forward, jab and move style over vargas' digging power shots that were not landing for the most part. however, I can see why a judge would be persuaded to give vargas an edge in close rounds because his shots were clearly harder. As I said i scored the fight 115-113 winky with many close rounds going to winky in the first and second third of the fight. I believe the judges scored the fight for vargas because he won more clear cut rounds (4 rounds in my book) than winky (who won 3 clear rounds in my book). And 2 of the 3 judges probally gave vargas the nod in those close rounds because he seemed to be throwing harder shots and as a poster said before, in 99 winky's style was not as appreciated as it is today. 2 sidenotes: 1) winky clearly took the last round off probably thinking he had it won - if he would have attempted to win he could have possibly earned a three way split draw ( as we saw in the JT winky has a tendency). he has nobody to blame except himself. 2) i found this fight to be difficult to score for the same reasons cotto-mosely was: many close rounds in which both fighters were going shot for shot and landing nearly identical amounts of punches
No Robbery iv seen the fight countless times and iv always had it 115-113 either way but mostly 114-114 Vargas didnt so much win it, Winky gave it to him.
Just saw Vargas vs Wright on ESPN Classics a couple of nights ago. Close fight, but the decision should have went to Winky.
Now that is a ridiculous score card. The fight was a close fight. I had Vargas winning, but it's been a long time since I watched it. ANY time I score a fight within 2 rounds for a margin of victory, I'm waiting for the judges decision. With few exceptions, you can find some rounds to make arguments one way or the other (judging is subjective, remember?). Calling any 12 round fight that reasonable viewers all score within 2 rounds one way or the other is just foolish. A robbery is win you can put together a vast majority of expert witnesses who have almost identical scorecards, and the official judges are way off. Saying that either fighter won a blowout in this one is just a sign of low boxing IQ. I seem to remember the fight being up for grabs and Vargas coming on to deliver in the later rounds. Vargas was a top notch fighter prior to the back injury, steroid violation, and an/off haitus. Yeah he got KO'ed by Tito and Oscar, but he was competative in both of those fights against the guys in the peak of their prime. The clear KO losses knock him out of the top boxing elite of his era, but he was still world class.
115-113 vargas in a tough fight to score.I think people look back now and say robberry because wright went on to be far more successful in the years since.
Just saw the fight a few days ago. Before watching the fight, I actually believed the hype of "winky got robbed". It was a close fight, but I saw Vargas edging a decision. Winky flat out gave two rounds away down the stretch. I was also surprised at how much better Vargas was back then.
