Did we readly get to see a prime Vargas caues we all know Tito fought him when Vargas was like 20 or 21 and i think Vargas needed a few more fight's to fight a superstar like tito and we know what happen and he was not the same great fighter he was BECOMING so maybe am wrong but did he reach his prime?
His back problems coupled with the KO losses coupled with the devastating psychological humiliating loss to ODLH all imo contributed to him having a very short prime.
i definitely think vargas could have used a few more years to fight tito. he was very young and when you're young and undefeated you think you can fight your way through everything. would have loved to see vargas - tito 4-5 years later
I have mixed emotions on that. On one hand he was the champ. He had beat fighters like Winky Wright and Ike Quartey. He needed to prove he was the #1 champ at 154 by beating the others. On the other hand Trinidad had about 10 years more pro experience and Vargas barely had twenty fights. Going into the 10th round I had the fight even, but Vargas didn't have his legs anymore. Vargas was able to completely dominate several rounds in their fight in the middle, but he had no other option but to slugg it out since the devastating 3 low blows robbed Vargas of any consitioning he had for the later rounds.
Vargas is a fighter who in my opinion could have been great. He didnt reach his prime yet, cuz it got beat out of him. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if Tito got the 1st round ko? But Vargas conditioning made him recover fast and endure a gruelling fight that he wasnt ready for. He reminds me of what happened to Taylor vs Chavez.
Personally speaking Vargas was rushed. Yes he showed great skill early and became the youngest jr middle champ ever, but he was too young. Look at cotto, they made sure he developed into his prime years. Vargas didn't have that. He shouldve had time to develop further. But then again many other fighters won titles as young as him and younger and didn't have trouble.
Yea, Vargas was rushed...That's prolly wat he wanted but it just didn't work out as well as it could have. By the way, does any1 remember the odds Oscar had of beating him in the "Bad Blood" fight??? ive been wondering this 4 a while
Regardless of the outcome against Tito, Vargas fought a good fight and was caught in the last round but he did very good against a much experience and harder hitting fighter in Tito IMO!!
classic example of too much too soon el feroz it surprises me to say this but i miss you already... his tenacity was unmatched
