Well said, the threads not the most credible. George in the 70's at his best was awesome, Max's right hand power hasn't been doubted by any credible scribe I've viewed over the decades, and Jimmy's wins over Lyle, Foreman, within a hair of Norton, and to most over Ali makes his best days anything but overated. Nuff said.
Foreman in the 70's was an extremely hard punching and strong fighter who was wild, emotionally weak and had no ability to pace himself. He excelled against certain styles and was exposed by others. He was "at his best" against a 32 year old Ali and Jimmy Young and failed each time. There is a reason many boxing observers said the 90's Foreman beats the 70's Foreman. Max Baer was a big right hand puncher but to say he was one of the hardest hitters that ever lived is in my opinion a gross over statement. I can list dozen fighters off the top of my head at heavyweight that were bigger punchers but when the name Baer comes up many compare him to an Shavers/Foreman/Liston and to me, based on who he fought, that is a big over ststement. Jimmy Young was a cutesy boxer and a spoiler. He was brave, had heart and was hard to look good against. He was not a great heavyweight unless you considered Ossie O an all time great.
It sure has your attention ... three posts by you in the first ten minutes ... why not ignore it hypocrite ?
I knew Boxed Ears would appear on this thread very quickly, once the words "Jimmy Young" were read. Nice work on that calling card, B.E.. I don't know if he was overated or not, but Jmmy was certainly appreciated by quite a few fans, myself included. George wasn't overated in the 70's. As for Max, I like him, but honestly I'm unimpressed by footage that I see of him. The truth is though, it's pretty ****ing hard to compare punching power.
Maxie could hit pretty hard. Buddy too. Foreman has a lot of force, but way less speed and accuracy. [dm]xep9er_max-baer-ko_sport[/dm]
Yeah that might make them more deadly in their own way. Maybe they were better at delivering their power.
