Mercante is shot, but thankfully he's still got a chin.

Noticed the same thing in his last two fights, seems to be the norm nowadays.

So is that why you rate Haney as a better boxer than Loma at this time?

With that frame & his early work i thought it could happen down the stretch & of course Loma's body shots only accelerated that notion.

I missed the stray left hook the first time around. Good catch. Mercante was awful in this one.

I just rewatched it and calm down a bit. My score is the same 116-112

I gave Loma round 2, 3, 5, 6 and the last four rounds.

    I gave Ortiz round 1, 4, 7 and 8.

My comments after rewatching it :

▪The fight is indeed close, but Ortiz ate a good number of convincing clean shots that sway the score in Loma's favor in that close rounds. The only close rounds that can sway to both sides or good draw are round 2 and 7.

▪Loma seems regained his ring form in later rounds, while Ortiz was less active.

▪Ortiz' lower hands style made it difficult for Loma to read his game, but in the same time it lower his defensive rate and more susceptible to direct and big shots.

▪Ortiz made great job of outjabbing Loma all rounds. His jab is sharp and powerful. Most of his clean shots came from jabs and his combinations (which is good quality), but he didn't manage to land big shots and intimidate Loma with the power of his size. He started losing those advantage in later rounds due to stamina dropping.

▪Apart from his ring rust, Loma still showed good quality of his defensive works, which is his prime strength in fighting all bigger opponents in 135.

He looked slower and had ring rust for most of the early rounds. For a guy who relies on being quick and sharp, who is giving up so much size to these guys, it’s a huge deal. Loma is no longer prime but I think he’s capable of more than he showed last night. Haney looks three divisions bigger. It will be interesting to see these two fight.

I predict the same guys who excused Canelo’s loss to Bivol because if the size difference will have no such understanding if Loma loses to Haney. Even though the size disparity between Loma and Haney is greater than Bivol/Canelo. Boxing needs more guys like Loma, willing to fight anyone.

Seems to me the truth is that those excusing Loma cause of his size, don’t do the same for canelo. That’s where the real hypocrites show themselves.

I wonder if Haney can still make it to 135 after some nice and delicious Christmas dinners and cakes.

Agreed on your last point. The very reason why Loma went to 135 because there is no one to fight in 130. Guys like Berchelt or Valdez wouldn't stand a chance against Loma. Funnily, the guy who goaded Loma to go up to fight him, Mikey Garcia, never ever fight him.

Loma fights bigger guys every fight and is in his mid 30’s. Canelo fought one slightly bigger prime guy in his career and got his ass kicked. Funny how that works.
