Greece was founded in 1821. It didn't exist before that. The (city-)states in antiquity had a completely different foundation and different identity and there is absolutely no continuity whatsoever. The modern Greeks are the former servants of the Ottoman empire who constructed their Greek identity in the 19th century via western liberal influence and via romantic nationalism. There was no Greek national identity before the 19th century, you can't translate some concepts from antiquity to modern age and there is no continuity since that culture was forgotten and smashed by Orthodox Christianity and later by Ottoman Islam. The self-awareness of Greek people before the 19th century nationalism was that of being Christian Ottomans.

From census data: In 2001 in Odessa region were more than 133 nationalities and only 0.1% of Greeks! Loma is one from 62,8% ukrainian, 20,7% russian, 6,1% bulgarian, 5% moldavian, 1,1% gagauz, 0,6% jew and others.

 

I think it might be the other way round. The northerners have been called barbarians and savages by Greeks and Romans for thousands of years. Nordic animosity towards Greeks on that part would be natural, yet one cannot escape the influence of Greco-Roman culture no matter what.
