It was Tuesday afternoon at the Urbina Westside Boxing Gym on Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles. Down the street a remake of the 1940 movie "The Green Hornet" was being filmed, which is appropriate because Israel Vazquez has been a superhero to boxing.

Vazquez first exceeded the expectations of some by winning the super bantamweight world championship with a 12th-round stoppage of Jose Luis Valbuena in March 2004. Two years earlier Vazquez was stopped in the 12th round by Oscar Larios in an interim title fight, a bout that had many thinking Vazquez wasn't quite world champion material.

Vazquez won five more title fights after beating Valbuena - one of the victories was a third-round technical knockout of Larios - before embarking on a journey that took him through three fights with Rafael Marquez.

Vazquez was stopped after seven rounds in the first bout, regained his title by stopping Marquez in the sixth in the second one and then won the rubber match with a 12-round split decision.

It has been called one of boxing's great trilogies.

Vazquez unfortunately suffered a detached retina in his right eye in the third fight, which took place at Home Depot Center in March 2008. He has not fought since, but he will be back in the ring next Saturday to take on Angel Priolo (30-7, 20 KOs) of Colombia in the featherweight main event at Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live.

Vazquez (43-4, 31 KOs) was working hard. As he did sit-ups in the ring,

his manager, Frank Espinoza, talked about this special fighter.
"I see a lot of hunger in Vazquez," Espinoza said. "He's very confident. I see he really has the will to come back. He really wants to get back in the ring and prove to his fans that he has a lot left."

Vazquez, of Los Angeles via Mexico, has affirmed his worth over and over again.

"Yes, in boxing you have to prove to yourself that you are a genuine boxer, that you like this sport," said Vazquez, 31. "I proved it against Oscar Larios, I proved it against Jhonny Gonzalez (in a title defense), I proved it against Marquez.

I'm glad your boys finally back. Hopefully that trilogy hasn't taken too much out of him, even though he won it I think he took a far bigger beating than Marquez did. Maybe he can fight the winner of JuanMa v Gamboa in late 2010?

Thanks man.... It is a possiblity. Vazquez want the big fights. But we want to see how he looks on October 10th and take it from there.....

I must say, you guys are cool on here. I know a lot of you are Juanma fans, Gamboa fans and so on. But you still show Vazquez respect. We appreciate that!

I'm a fan of all 3. First and foremost, I'm a boxing fan and that means I want to see the biggest and best fights. I think JuanMa v Vazquez would be fantastic to watch. I'm also a big Rafa Marquez fan, but how can you not respect a warrior like Vazquez? He leaves everything in the ring when he fights, he's all action, very exciting and tough as nails.

Vazquez ia a true warrior no doubt but i think he should retired cause he has took so many blows from many fights and that will take it's toll. I could see Lopez ruined Vazquez career for good if Vazquez does fight him down the road. I'm still pissed that Vazquez and Rafael Marquez are still in the top 10 p4p when they haven't done nothing in over 1 year. Paul Williams deserve to be in the top 10 p4p more then those 2.

Thanks for the article, Frankiej, it's much appreciated. :D GREAT to see Israel back, he's been solely missed. One of my favourite fighters, a true warrior, nothing but respect for him.

If you really support Izzy, then maybe you should ask him to reconsider making a comeback
before he receives permanent serious damage.
He had some serious eye issues that required surgery.....he can literally end up blind and
    live with a jello brain.

He is an awesome fighter with enormous heart, but I believe he has been in one too many
    punch for punch wars !!!

I just hope he doesnt get hurt. Those fights with Marquez and add in the 2nd Larios fight and the Johnny Gonzalez fight it might be best for him to cut his career alittle bit short. Maybe 2 more years.

There are a lot of people close to him who can judge his condition much better than me. Also, if he was medically cleared to fight, no way he should't get a tune-up and get rid of the ring rust. He was victorious in his last fight and forced to be out. Now he's coming back regardless what I say, and as he does, I'm supporting him. But I also stated he should never fight Rafael Marquez again, and I still say that.

Finally somebody that is actually thinking straight. Look Vazquez is a warrior no doubt but look at his wars with many many fights that he gets hits hard shots after hard shots. It's worse then Morales getting those shots. People need to wake up to reality cause Vazquez is going to get brain damage i'm telling you people.
