This fight went on the records as a 12 rounds draw even as Vazquez won it on two of the judges and thus should be a win for Wilfredo Vazquez.. Why is that? The fight took place in Japan in 1987 and was for Vazquez's WBA world bantamweight title.
Antonio, according to boxrec 1 judge voted for Vasquez, another for Muguruma and the third judge had it 115-115, so the draw decision was correct. Was the decision announced differently?
Antonio, I'll give you another ring oddity. The Vicente Saldivar v Fino Rosales fight. My old RRB always said it was for the featherweight title. But now, according to reports, they only fought for Saldivar's Mexican title. How is this possible? They both weighed in within the limit. Saldivar's world title had to be on the line, yet, all reports say the Mexican title only. Would love to know more about this.
I don't know. WIkipedia has it 2-1 for Vazquez, which, I believe at the time of writing, was also how Boxrec had it. It's just weird.
He was the only featherweight champ at the time, so he held both WBA and WBC. You can't look that up at boxrec unfortunately, because for some reason they have erased everything having to do with the WBA. So on their site, it doesn't exist. Don't know what that was all about.
If Boxrec is correct it was only sceduled for 12 rounds. A world title fight should be 15 rounds. The same problem in Britain when the Europe title fights were reduced to 12 rounds while British fights were still 15 rounds. Dave Green v Henry Rhiney for example.
