His legs were gone the comission/doctors Didn't want to see Verdejo take more punishment.

The stoppage was justifiable, was this even for a world title??

Not shocked in the least, but that was a bull**** stoppage, he only had a few seconds left.

Given that Verdejo didn't really throw a punch of consequence throughout the round, got dropped hard and wavered when taking those last two clean rights, I'm OK with the stoppage. Gotta defend yourself, and Felix wasn't doing a great job of it in those last two and half minutes.

Just watched it and it did seem like a bad stoppage. But might as well get it out of the way now, the suspense for his first loss was building up too much.

This might seem like an overreaction, but I'm being serious.... Verdejo should just retire. It became apparent even BEFORE tonight that his talent didn't match his hype. I don't think this is a case where a young fighter can take his first L and come back stronger. Verdejo will become nothing more than a stepping stone if he continues on, and since that was FAAARRR from the plan, he might as well walk away from the sport now while still has all his marbles in tact.

At least the stoppage ensured the right guy won, because I doubt the Mexican would have gotten the nod and I had him winning by 1 point before the knockdown.

Speaking of Cotto vs. Margarito I, coincidentally while searching through very old threads for something else unrelated I happened upon the RBR thread for it, and was struck by three facts:

    https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/round-per-round-cotto-margarito.79567/

    1. for some reason I never posted in that RBR thread...not while the fight was happening, nor in the aftermath. :nusenuse: I just don't have a single one in there, even though I'd by then been a very active member of the board for 1½ years. Strange.
    2. this place was such a free-for-all back then. @heerko koois made the RBR thread at like 4:30am in the wee hours of the eve of the fight, and wasn't even intending to do a RBR himself, just putting out the bat signal for somebody else to do it. That was pretty common in those days, in fact - there were unofficial designated "top guys" that did them like @Arriba or @RightCross but there were just as many threads started up by randoms (who ofttimes didn't contribute a single meaningful post besides the OP)
    3. watch how quickly the tides turn, with the Cotto contingent giddily gloating along with his early successes and then vanishing when he gets stopped, while the Margarito fans went on a fucking sore-winner rampage.

He didn't take the knee or pull a standing No Mas so we must afford him respect for that, especially after the precedent PR's least favourite son Melon Head Miguel set after he took the knee against Margarito. Taking the knee is akin to a straight man allowing another man to take his ass. However, for a PR fighter to take the knee against a Mexican opponent it's tantamount to the entire country of Mexico taking the collective ass of Puerto Rico and its people as a whole. I'm not even Rican but even I will never forgive Melon Head Miguel for doing that to his own people. For me, he's the second biggest POS in the history of our magnificent sport. The only reason he's not the biggest one is because nobody could ever top Roy in that regard.

Very bad times in boxing for both Cubans and Puerto Ricans right now.
