I think most people would agree that Vergil Ortiz and Boots Ennis are the two best fighters at 154 right now. They’re both considered borderline Pound for Pound fighters, and the two of them together are approaching super fight levels of hype. The only thing missing is a title. It just doesn’t feel right to have such a big fight without any real belt on the line. The Ring Magazine Junior Middleweight belt is currently vacant with Vergil ranked number one. Vergil has held the WBC interim belt for well over a year and somehow hasn’t gotten a shot at Fundora. This is a great chance for Turki to make a statement that the Ring belt will go to the true champion of the division, as opposed to the alphabet titles from the sanctioning bodies that let boxers play games and politics and hold up divisions for years.
Ennis has not done anything to earn that nr 2 spot at 154. Fundora and Murtazaliev clearly outrank him, and then there are Madrimov and the winner of Zayas vs Baraou.
