There is a kid from my gym who was signed up to fight in the Vermont Golden Gloves(since Maine doesn't have their own). For some reason tho, they changed the style of competition and had to cut back on fighters, only taking so many people from each weight class. Now my friend is kicked out, along with many other people. Is it like this at all the other golden glove competitions? It doesnt make sense to me cuz if u want to win a competition, it should be against the best, and how could u fight the best if there are too many people.
Well, the way it works is that an LBC has it's Golden Gloves, so Maine might be part of Vermont's LBC. But they only have time to do at most a 3 day advancing tournament; unless they split the whole tournament into two weekends (which might be a lot to ask when people are driving a couple hours to get there). We don't have that problem out here because we don't have an overpopulation of boxers in any weight class, at most you might get 2 guys in a weight class for the LBC Championship and LBC Golden Gloves.
I hate tournaments because each day you have to weigh in. Sometimes you do not fight until the second or third day. You do not know that until around noon of the first day of fights. For me I had to cut 15 pounds off my normal weight because of my decision to fight at a lower class. The good thing is that I have decided to go up one weight class so I don't have to drop so much weight.
i jsut wanted to give you guys an update. My friend from my gym was alowed to fight, due to someone having to dop out. He's had 2 fihts so far, ad won them both. He is fighting in the finals this weekend. It's amazing cuz he wasnt even supposed to fight in it, and is gonna end up taking the tournament. Here is the rsults, is name is Jeremy Witham. http://vermontgoldengloves.com/results.html this is an article about the first fight: http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080127/SPORTS/801270314/1002
wow.. i just realized how many typos were in my last post. but i just wanted to tell everyone, he lost in the finals . it sucks, but he will be back next year. the kid who beat him was a southpaw named chad garfield.
Good to hear about current golden glove activity from the west coast of Canada to the eastern region of the USA. Also, good to flashback to past events from the early Golden Gloves action in places like Seattle or Vancouver or even regional tournaments such as the Vancouver Island Golden Gloves of 1954, or the Nanaimo Bathtub Capital Golden Gloves tournament of 1978.
