41-3 (29) Former #1 P4P fighter Former undisputed welterweight world champion Belts won: IBF Welterweight, WBA Welterweight, WBC Welterweight, WBC Jr. Middleweight (twice) RECORD VS. FORMER OR CURRENT WORLD CHAMPS (8-3) WINS: Mosley x2, Frank, Phillips, Mora, Baldomir, Quartey, Piccirillo LOSSES: Mayorga x2, Mora age 37 re-gained WBC 154 title over Mora Tragically gunned down months after the fight
No. He had Mosley's number, but other than that, he did nothing that warrants HOF consideration. Let's hope he doesn't get in based on sympathy alone...
yep, that 1st mosley fight is classic. mosley got proper ****ed up in that fight and it takes a special fighter to do that to prime mosley.
he won 4 world titles at 2 weights and destroyed prime unbeaten mosley and you think he did nothing :-(
No, he shouldn't be remembered just for the Mosley wins because upsets happen all of the time and Douglas ain't getting in just for beating Tyson. It's whole body of work that should be remembered and that's where Forrest lacks not his fault I blame his shoulder surgery. He was special the first time he fought Mosley but we can't put him in because of it. RIP Vernon "Viper" Forrest
Worthy. Owned a prime P4p#1 Mosley to win the undisputed welter title. Took alot of time off with injuries but came back strong at 154lb.
besides winning 4 world titles in 2 weight divisions? is their a criteria that says you have to win 5 world titles before you go in the HOF or something?
OK, so let's say a 37-year-old Forrest, after beating Mora for the WBC 154 title, did this to close out his career: 1. Unified at 154 by beating Paul Williams at 154 for his WBO title (at the time) OR 2. Moved up to 160 and beat Sturm for his WBA title OR 3. Moved up to 160 and beat Pavlik for his WBC/WBO titles If he added that one extra W to his resume, would it make him HOF-worthy to the people who say no right now?
Hall of very good, but really didn't do much outside of the Mosley wins. Got a gift against old Quartey, beat a faded Baldomir, 1-1 with Mora. Winning a title in a third weight class probably doesn't change things. I don't think he's particularly close to getting in, and there are already a few guys who won titles in three weight classes who aren't in (i.e. Duke McKenzie, Leo Gamez, plus nobody says "future hall of famer Fernando Montiel"). Especially in this era of watered down titles, winning titles shouldn't be the mark of greatness. Who they beat should be.
I agree with most of the posters here that he is not HOF worthy. Vernon Forrest had the talent to be a great fighter but because of injuries he never lived up to expectation. If one of the criteria for getting in there is being a good humanitarian, well then yes. On the other hand, if Barry Mac Guigan is a HOFamer, then anything can happen.
If the Hall was a place for the absolute elite, no. But given who's in the hall, and that he was clearly number one in on weight class, twice beat someone who will (though not in my opinion) be regarded as a legend and was a decent titlist in a second division, that is enough. The hall of fame has been demoted to the hall of very good. And he was that.
