Entering the Ring while rapping and a few minutes later getting knocked out by Mayorga. That was kinda funny.
That devastating Uppercut landed on Mosley in the 2nd of the first fight... I was in shock and awe as Mosley was my favorite fighter at the time. At the time I said the Viper was the real "Sugar" in this fight. Also that devastating body shot that had Mosley doubled over and almost out.
Honestly I didnt get to know Vernon on a personal level, However he was with us at Wildcard when he had his come back fight I think against Rios this was after he had his fights with Mayorga. The first time I spoke to him was after getting my ass beat from pilar to post by Juan Carlos "Panda" Gomez, Both Vernon and Dominick Guinn were there at the time, Vernon simply took me aside and stated I needed to strengthen my neck.... but he also said you dont have to take the shots to prove your tuff, prove your smart you will last longer in there. Since then while he was there after the routine he would do floor work with all of us who were green in the sport... Nice guy to the bone to be honest, I remember he was working out to one Hip Hop track each and every day he started out with it, I loved the sound of it so much it had a sample from Ozzie, I asked him what that song was so I could find it, he was like Twista.... and lil john.... Lets go.... but with that southern accient of his I couldnt tell what he was saying,.... until the threw out Lil John and Twista... you learn alot from guys like that, and especially if you didnt have a jab, Vernon would show you what a jab was and what a jab was not, usally your jab was not a proper jab....
I rate him almost Hall of Fame but not quite. Had great fights with Mosley. He was a very very good fighter.
I remember seeing a HBO feature about his charity work, seeing how he was with disabled people. He was natrual, down to earth and seemed to really care, one of few superstar boxers who actually get involved, both physically and financially with a cause that they are passionate about. R.I.P
I remember thinking Mosley was going to beat him, and I was very wrong. He schooled and knocked Mosley down, when Shane was arguably still at his best (although not at 154) Also I will remember Forrest as a very charitable person, he was a good man
Lots to love about the man. A known philanthropist. A kind hearted man, who also was a killer in the ring. He made mosley look like he wasnt int he same league when Shane was p4p number 1. My friend Jason Lehoullier was signed to fight Vernon for a comeback after the mora fights but tragedy wouldn't allow it. RIP to you Vernon, a hell of a fighter, and a hell of a man.
I loved Forrest. The Mosley fights were amazing, the first Mayorga fight was a shocker, the second I thought he won. I always felt Vernon v. Winky would have been amazing.
I'd always disliked the fact that Mosley took that sugar moniker. I always felt Sugar should be reserved for boxers, not brawlers. Forrest was much more deserving of the Sugar label than Mosley. Mayweather should have been, Sugar Floyd Mayweather.
