Well, I first boxed for a couple years, and of course you turn your hand in boxing. I took JKD though about a year ago, and got taught to throw the vertical punch.
Now, I'm at a point where I'm just self training, and I stuck with the JKD ways in a lot of my training...Even boxing.
So, can people list the pros/ cons of both horizontal/ vertical punches?
I always heard vertical is faster (which makes sense to me), and that if you turn your power you do generate a little more power.

Also, the biggest question which is right for me? I'm only 5'6, 165 (in great shape though, hit very hard, and have good quickness for my size/ good flexibility). The reason I thought vertical punches were good for me (JKD) was since I was short, and with a vertical punch you aren't suppose to extend all the way anyways....SO, figure I need to be on the inside in most fights, and like to be aggressive...So, short, vertical punches on the inside seemed right for me, and I still generate plenty of power from my hips. I just now thought I'd throw vertical, and it does feel a lot more stiff, and a little more power.

BTW: When I talk about punching I am talking about both in a boxing ring, and on the street.

Why can't you mix it up?

I'm not really to sure what you mean here? are we talking uppercuts and hooks? or hand movement?

And use elbows and forearms on the street save your hand a nice bit of damage.

Straight punches. Jabs/ Straight crosses. I always turn my hand and throw a uppercut the way it should be thrown, and my hooks are good.
I actually do practice a lot of elbows/ knees for in close street fighting, but just wanted to know the best way of me fighting using straight punches. Again...Wether I'm in a boxing match, or a fight.

You want your palm to be facing the floor always.. so horizontal for straight punches.

This is one of the problems with self training, you'll be picking up bad habits, but I suppose it doesn't matter if your only training for a potential street fight!

In a previous thread i asked if anyone knew about the vertical punch,as a friend of mine was convinced it was the only true power punch out there. My friend has me teaching this style to a student he passed on to me. I am so used to turning my wrist over when i punch that i find it hard to teach another style.

I used to laugh when i saw a Martial artist punching this way.Now im a little more aware that Punching with a vertical fist ensures you at least punch in a straight line.

I was told or read somewhere years ago that the twisting of the wrist was more for causing a cut then anything else.Makes sense to me.

I have been training the student in this vertical punch routine, and i must confess im no wiser as to whether its a stronger or better way to be honest.

One small observation seems to be the reach is shortened just a wee bit via the use of the vertical punch......but in a way it makes for a guaranteed straight line punch and over extending through a punch is eliminated.

I must say that a change of stance to maximize the power of the punch can be made.....but i doubt it would fare well in a boxing ring due to the planted position you find yourself taking.

As far as street fighting goes i agree with Gpater and teach my guys to save breaking there knuckles by cupping the hand and giving a whack to the ears.Sounds pathetic but its quick and effective and affects the balance of the one being hit. Hit both ears if your up against a beast who wants to do you harm, but be aware you will most likely burst his ears drums and be up on charges if it wasnt called for.:hey

It's not self trained. It's Jeen Kune doe (SP). Vertical punches, eye gouges, knee breaks, groin kicks. That's there style....Bruce Lee's style of fighting.
About all I know is they say vertical punches are quicker...Since you don't have to take the extra second to turn your hand. Plus, with sparring the vertical punch fits easier through somebody elses gloves than horizontal. I do believe if I turn my hand it does give me a little extra power, but then again...I guess in a street fight it doesn't really matter how I hit em...Quite easy to bust somebody up.

the horizantle punch is definitely better because it allows you to use your shoulders which gives you more power, more reach, and more speed. Also you can still throw pretty straight with them. Also since your short your going to want the reach. definitely go for horizantle

I'm partial to power jabbing the adam's apple. :D Works like a charm against non-boxers! (Your mileage may vary.)

Don't kill anybody! Unless it's to avoid that fate yourself, maybe.

Power jabbing someone in the Adam's Apple is fine until they turn blue and get wheeled off the morgue like ;)
