There was something weird in the air yesterday night in Oakland. Chucky Flores acting like he got KO'd by late shot worked against him. He robbed himself of an opportunity to fight and make use of his long, gruelling training camp. In need of breather, we turn toward WardKovalev2. We didn't get that breather. Kovalev squeaked a couple of rounds at the start where Ward was tentatively finding his range and adjusting to Sergey. Even when punched on the belt line, Sergey complained to the extent of stopping action himself and ACTING like they were actually to the balls and trying to make out some legit punches by Ward are low. We may point the finger at Ward calling him a dirty fighter, but Sergey was being an actress - love him or hate him. If and when Sergey was hit low, why not go about it like Loma does without going to excess? It wasn't just that, it was an all around non-spirited performance, pronounced by the willingness to just turn his back on Ward, lacking the diligence when preparing for and during the fight having barely anything more than a jab, getting the weaker counters of the two in during exchanges and resorting to pitter patter punches as Ward took his right hand away and failing to adapt whatsoever. So much for the damn Heptathlon coach to increase stamina. When Ward faced adversity, he got up from the canvas and racked up the points. When Sergey faced adversity, he just wallowed and unsuccessfully relied on things external to himself to bail him out. He lost himself. There's no excuse for a truly Great LHW like Sergey to be KO'd by Ward. I rate Ward extremely highly but he shouldn't have been able to KO Sergey. You can keep posting GIF's and videos of the very last low blow, but that wasn't the issue. Hell, all of the other punches leading up to that last low blow were belt line, and this was just after Ward rocked what was clearly a finished Kovalev who was beyond a 'second wind'. Focus on the truth, not what Sergey is focussing on out of desperation. 15 years from now, Sergey is going to admit to himself over a bottle of whiskey, that he just couldn't handle Ward's challenge. Sergey is a fine boxer, a GREAT LHW but not the man I thought he was. It's not about the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog.
The difference is Ward was given the chance to respond to adversity. The ref waved it off as soon as SK was in trouble. You can't pretend that both had equal opportunity to bounce back from being in trouble.
What a bizarre assessment of the fight. Let's see you get hit in and around the crotch throughout the fight by this sleazebag and see how demoralized you'd be. He's not the man you thought he was because Ward smashed his balls last night, and he trained to do that **** in camp, the low blows were a part of the strategy. And they were low, think about it, Kovalev came out with renewed vigor that round and started it well, he was going to Ward's body and he picked up his volume, and then Ward started aiming below the beltline. No one is that good at breaking the rules without training to do so, the man is a piece of **** and should be barred from the sport.
You also fail to acknowledge the fact that had SK began returning low blows he would be the one getting points deducted before getting disqualified. When a fight is rigged to be in favour of one fighter you are up against the odds. Prichard Colon found out the hard way and paid with his life by trying to fight back in a fight that was rigged against him from the get go. So instead of questioning SKs spirit, start questioning why this blatant level of corruption continues to go unpunished with dumb fans lapping it all up just because their favoured fighter is the one benefiting from it!
So he just randomly decided to sit on the ropes because he no longer wanted to fight? Nothing to do with 3 blatant synthetic testosterone fuelled low blow power shots to the balls that made him whince down in pain?
Great intervention with creating this thread. Yep, without wanting to discredit Ward, more than impressed by him I was disappointed with Kovalev. Fought a stupid fight, followed Ward around, was sloppier than the first one, didn't have a focused attack, that resulted in often pushing his punches, his stamina problem was again exposed, and as you said when it came down to it he didn't have the heart. Turned his back on Ward, let up in exchanges, and when Ward first hurt him he had the look of quit on his face and wilted.
It's noone's fault but kovalev's fault if he's dumb enough to sit on the ropes instead of taking a knee. Which oportunity are you going to give to a defenceless fighter sitting on the ropes? NONE. Kovalev was not smart enough, not only at this point of the fight, but during the whole 2 fights. It's nobody's fault but his, stop making excuses. He sits on the ropes and refuses to defend himself, ffs!!! what did you expect?
A week or two before the fight, his own trainer betrayed him. He said in 24/7 that he wanted to win the fight alone. Even though boxing is a one man sport, you can't win it on your own. Kovalev was pushed to the limit. Mentally, he folded.
I'm disappointed that Kovalev hadn't improved anything in his game. He should've done it. On the other hand, Ward has certainly improved. He's like Floyd. If he has problems in the 1st fight, he fixes all mistakes in rematch. People can talk about low blows, but that was better version of Ward tonight, and it was obvious from the opening bell.
