*Jersey* Joe Walcott, mind. Now, here's a guy that is A. typically recognised as one of the top-tier technicians in the HW champ history books, with some great names on his official win list. He's also been looked at as one of the most impressive challenging forces of Joe Louis' reign, a general consensus top 2 heavyweight. But, he never did have an on-paper wow factor that some significantly lesser proven fighters have managed with great accolades accompanying them.

He didn't get to be a dominant force as the top man at any time or place but I feel like he makes the cut on ability and best displays of it. Not to mention, sometimes he just looks so cool he should be standing next to Richard Roundtree in an arctic spacesuit. What does that mean? I'm not sure. I'm half in the bag right now. You have no idea how many spell-checker corrections have taken place while trying to post this. I gave up on a word twice because spell-checker didn't know what the flip I was trying to say either. What say you on this HOF fighting man? Did he earn pugilistic greatness or was he respectably just very good?

Walcott would seem to be the poster-boy of very good but not great, no?

I was more so asking. With my limited knowledge of him he just SEEMED like that way to me. I'm no expert in anything let alone heavyweights so I shouldn't even be posting.

It's tough, but I'm going very good. But there's a case for great. The Charles fight, the Marciano fight, the Louis controversial fight, then there's Maxim, Elmer Ray, Harold Johnson, and Jimmy Bivins. Probably not consistent enough to be great, but circumstances and the times made it harder to achieve that.

Arguably great, yes. A top 101+ type of fighter, I wouldn't say he was greater than Marcel mind you.

Think Joe was still hungry and not properly backed at this point. That sort of thing can make a world a difference.

    I'd say great.

His consistency was not great and he didn't really achieve that much in comparison to those generally recognised as great.

However when he put it together he could fight great. He came up short against Louis but then again who wouldn't? He beat enough great fighters that we are allowed to call him a great fighter also.

I just like watching him fight. Mix of brutality and slick skill. Tough truly mad fighter when steamed up. Which made up for the inability to control the fight at times.

I vote very good but he is one of the best example of your series. In classic boxing banter His name obviously associated with true boxing greats so it helps his case more than legitimate achievements and domination
