Very good, had a relatively long stint as king, but no massive names did he beat, lost to Hearns in the fight that could have made him a legend

He's not even very good. When he won his paper title, he must have cared about it alot and trained extremely hard and had a decent 4 year reign fighting bums.

Probably ranks the lowest of the 'Very Good or Great' threads, his resume is very thin. Still it depends where you draw the line, he's an outright terrier of a left hooker and a great puncher.

SRL said he was going to fight him, but Ray, as usual, figured out a way not to fight him while Cuevas was in his prime at welter.

Cuevas made a mistake in fighting Hearns in his backyard of Detroit...plus he wore the wrong type of shoes into ring, i,e. leather, and was slipping all over the ring. Doesn't mean Cuevas would have won.....just at least he would have been more competitive.

The Duran fight was at 154 lbs, and by that time Duran was the much superior fighter.

Rate Cuevas a very good fighter because he didn't win the fights he needed to at the highest level.

(And of course it looks like Benitez wanted no part of him)

Pipino was fortunate that he never fought Palomino, Leornard, and that Randy Shield had no punch.
