Of his only two losses, Hernandez takes one in an attempt to step up in weight and earn a lightweight title against lightweight powerhouse Oscar De La Hoya and the other in what turned out to be his last fight against future superstar Floyd Mayweather, Junior.

Classic, what's the verdict...Very good or great? Do you feel strongly about your pick or consider him a "borderline" case?

Very good or great? Volume 1: Ken Norton

    Hold on for the poll.

Genaro was a very good fighter and a great person one of the nicest guys in boxing, hope he continues to do well after surviving a cancer scare. He had great boxing skills (see Nelson,Famoso, pre title fights, early rounds vs ODLH)but sometimes made fights harder than they should when he wanted to rumble(See Paez,Waren)even though he was an excellent in fighter for being so tall. When boxing he was sooooo hard to beat and had great ability. That being said i believe he should be in the IBHOF. Although sorry to say even though one of my all time favorites i would not label him as a "Great Fighter".

I think that Genaro was a very good technical fighter with some pop when his hand was good.

Anarci, I remember our old friend Johnny thought so much of him he thought he could give Oscar issues.

Good fighter, but short of greatness. He lost to the best he faced, aside from an ancient Azumah Nelson.

    How do you substantiate that?

I don't think he was great or very good. I think he was a good fighter. Nothing more, nothing less.

Very good fighter, but an ATG as far as one of the classiest Champions ever. A true credit to the sport.

You could make a case for him being in the lower reaches of the top 10 at 130lbs (the Oscar fight doesn't count in that regard, since it was at 135 and Mayweather even at that point was pretty great), but on the whole, I'd lean more toward very good than truly great. Still a hell of a fighter when he was at his best.

Incredibly nice guy and a really solid fighter for a moderate period of time, but the way he lost so one-sidedly to a very very green fighter, even one as good as Mayweather, really limits his historical standing.

To be fair, i thought he was well on the way down by that time.

I agree with Popkins to an extent.imo he was one of those fighters who were a bit better than just solid but not quite genuinely very good either; he's not one of my favourite standup technicians.he definitely benefited from the multiple belt junior weightclass era, though he certainly isn't the worst fighter to have done so.

I'm a bit surprised by this, gents, but though I don't agree, I don't think it's a particularly unfair conclusion.

And even though I'm on the side of just very good, I'm feeling bad for Chicanito here. 100% coming down on the "very good" side in the votes so far and two that don't even think he qualifies as that. Yikes.
