Certainly among the heavyweight champions, he has got it by a significant margin.

Floyd should have gotten the decision the second time vs Quarry.....and......he derserved to be the first 3 time champ (or titlist if you like since it was the WBA belt), after beating Jimmy Ellis in '68 Stockholm.Floyd would have been a truly great cruiserweight and/or lightheavy champ, but since his career involved tilting at windmills "whilst" fighting those storied 210-220 lb behemoths like Liston and Ali, he is judged less favorably by some for his efforts. I think he was a very good champion, but a GREAT man and human being who more than honored his profession by representing it with dignity and class during his career.

 

No harm in getting flattened by Liston, especially when you're only 190lbs and started your career at 16something!

Beat many decent fighters, deserves to be great!

 

He was a good fighter overall but his losses to Sonny Liston (2x) and his hopes of being a champion thrice was crushed by a prime Muhammad Ali. Those two fighters will always limit his career.

Great, his resume is good and I think his skills are impressive.

 

A great talent, but I think he came around at the wrong time. I like him in the Marciano, Walcott, Charles era. I think he has a chance in a prime for prime match up with Ali. Look at their first fight when he's seen better days. Patterson is able to get his gloves on Ali quite a bit.

 

It's just P4P lists getting on my tits, Patterson's weight climbing achievements are Henry Armstrongesque or Fitz. He was protected as HW Champion by Demato, but so was Armstrong was as WW Champ, albeit to a lesser degree. Like Armstrong his best wins at his highest career weight came after he lost his title

 

He wasn't a great heavyweight.

But he was a great boxer.
He was even small then and today he would be around the size of Carl Froch.

It's amazing for smaller fighters to achieve so much

To Powerpuncher: Patterson his weight climbing was even more amazing as he was fighting men who still weighed more than him.
Armstrong might not have been at "p4p prime weight" but atleast his opponents were still the same weight, Patterson had to fight men bigger than him on a constant basis.

His Liston losses mean as much as Carl Froch getting KO'd in 1 by David Haye

Isn't that Jennifer Beal? Anyway Patterson beat more ranked contenders than anyone besides Ali, Louis, Holmes, and Lewis. More than Foreman, Frazier, Liston, or Tyson. Not bad. Not bad at all. Great, you might say.
