Ha ha, yeah. But if they ask who Charles Darwin was and a fighter replies "A 19th century English novelist and storyteller who died before he finished The Mystery of Edwin Drood"" where does that leave us? :huh ps. I wasn't referring to Steele/Taylor by the way, just refs/fighters in general.
Yeah, this is fair. Although he asked McGuigan was he ok when he was floored in the final round against Cruz, Barry said 'yeas' was knocked down again (so he obviously wasn't ok), second time around Steele didn't bother asking Finbar how he was- just allowed him to go on as the seconds ticked away.
..........Well if he answers that way, he's clearly out of it and the fight must be stopped. I always liked the touch I remember Mills Lane doing. After examining the fighter who was knocked down, he'd finish with "walk to me." That was good. That's a good indicator.
Someone posted a fight on here the other day I think it was in the thread about fighters pleading with the ref to stop the fight in order to spare their opponent from further punishment. The fight was RRJ vs Bryant Brannon. The referee was Ron Lipton. Now I've always thought quite highly of Ron Lipton as he comes across as very knowledgeable but his handling of this fight, specifically deciding when to stop it left a lot to be desired. In no way am I saying that Ron Lipton deserves the label of 'worst ref of all time'. In fact the only reason I brought it up is that I've read countless posts from Ron regarding other ref's and his opinion on them, in which he usually describes just how incompetent they are. Yet Bryant Brannon was obviously out on his feet it was plain to see, RJJ was pleading with him to stop it, yet he wouldn't until RRJ obliged and duly knocked the defenseless Brannon out. It was not too pretty. Has anyone else seen this, if so what do you think about it?

I thought Lipton did a fine job with Brannon. I thought the referee in the Jones-Sosa fight stopped it too soon, particularly given that Merqui had a rep for coming back after being hurt.
A fine job? Brannon was totally out of it, it was obvious he was in no condition to continue. It was totally irresponsible to let him continue in that state, this was not a gladiatorial fight to the finish held in the coliseum. When was the last time you saw the fight? I'm talking specifically about the very poor late stoppage.
Beyond the Taylor fight, Richard Steel also stopped Tyson v. Ruddock I after only a few good blows... way prematurely.
did richard steele also officiate tyson seldon. that fight looks like a fix. quite a lot of tyson fights look like fixes to be honest
I disagree ,I think Steele did the right thing ,Taylor did not respond when asked,it does not matter how many seconds are left on the clock. The referee is there to protect the fighters, he is not a time keeper.
I swear to God YG i was reading this page and couldnt remember the fighters nevermind the referee and was thinking how i could word it to make sense, when i came across your post.:good
The sum ***** from South America who refereed the "Hearns-Andries" fight of 1987 for the WBC 175 pound title........ I can't recall his name, but he was a clustered **** to the maxi-pad..... PLUS! The recent ******* who handled "Klit-Briggs." That dickhead could've called it off after round 8 at any given time... hat MR.BILL
Cap'n Ronald Lipton is a fine referee.... When he's on his game, he can be # 1..... He handled "Morrison-Ruddock" very well.... Lipton gave Ruddock every honest chance in the book to win that fight..... Ruddock failed there in Kansas City.... MR.BILL:hat
Ruddock was utterly shot-to-**** & still almost KO'd Morrison. Prime vs Prime, Morrison would have been sparked cold as a corpse.
