Veteran Ring Observer Bill Gallo Classes Pacquiao with Robinson and Pep

The praises just keep on pouring in for the potent Filipino punching machine Manny Pacquiao.

Bill Gallo, the legendary columnist and cartoonist for The New York Daily News watched Pacquiao conquer Margarito and was thoroughly impressed by the performance.

He wrote in a column in Tuesday’s edition of The Daily News: “As soon as the bout started, it was amazingly apparent that the difference in weight would have nothing to do with the outcome. Nor did the 4-inch height advantage Margarito had over this brash “Philippine Piston. All right, are you getting a bit of the picture? You want more, like how good is he as a fighter? Here it is, and you can quote: This is one hell of a fighter, the likes of which I haven’t seen since Willie Pep and Sugar Ray Robinson. Yes, those two whom I’ve always regarded as the best ever.”

Gallo, who was born in 1922 and is now 87, and has followed the fight game since childhood, observed,”By the second round, Pac already had figured out how to beat this big man, who had his right hand cocked to throw at an unprotected chin,” he wrote. “Never happened. Nearly every time Margarito threw that right, Pac, with his shifty, inventive head moves, eluded the punch – the same one Margarito had used to score 27 knockouts.”

“It seemed so natural for Pac – every time Margarito would miss, like a flash came two pumps of Pac’s right to Margarito’s jaw, followed by a nice left half-hook, half-uppercut. Those were the kind of moves Pep and Robby used to make. To the eyes of a fight buff, it was an artful and beautiful performance. Round by round, the slaughter continued.”

We're just lucky to be living in an era where a boxing great evolved from a lowly flyweight. We'll never have another Pacquiao, not even in a several lifetimes of generations after us.

This should be weighted very heavily, imo. Here is a guy who saw ALL these fighters compete, going back to probably the late 30s. My feeling is that it isn't even debatable. Pacquiao is the greatest multi-weight fighter since Henry Armstrong. He is right there.

I assume by that term you mean a fan of Pacquiao? Not particularly. I just know boxing history and recognize Pacquiao's achievements for what they are - exceptional.

It seems to me that if you're a boxing fan, you have to love Pacquiao. That hardly makes one a *******. It makes him a boxing fan. How do you not like him and the Durans of the world? that's what boxing is about, not being afraid to go to war and having the skills to either take your opponents best shots, or better yet, the ability to avoid them, while landing meanful shots yourself. That is the art of boxing, and Pacquiao is brilliant at it!
